There are many places within an 8 hours drive from Chicago. Are you looking for a weekend getaway or just wanting to visit some cities and go sightseeing?

I can offer up suggestions, but will need to know what you want to do, i.e. historical, arts, dining, nature.

Weekend & long weekend gateways are preferred. More interested in Natural Beauty.

Wisconsin Dells is a wonderful suggestion.

My family did a road trip once going via chicago upto wisconsin dells, in addition to the amusement parks, there are three state parks in the area. I think we paid for a pass to one, and could get into one or both of the other two on same day. They were beautiful to visit. We also visited a casino in the area. We went during the labor day weekend, so the hotel had good rates as mostly kids were going to back to school. We also went to Madison, which is also lovely. We stopped for lunch there, but would have loved to do things on the lakes there. We also went to Minneapolis/St. Paul area, to visit the Mall of America. I faintly remember there was a series of parks around the city, and we went to an area that had a small but beautiful waterfall. Cherish the memories.

Lake Geneva is also worth a visit, I believe about 1 hour north of Chicago. And the botanical gardens in north Chicago are lovely.

Lake Geneva is beautiful when the weather is nice. If you can, I would recommend staying at the Grand Geneva. It's a bit pricey, but a beautiful hotel - it has a golf course, ski hill, spa, restaurants, etc. It's very peaceful there.

If you go into downtown Lake Geneva, the Abbey Resort & Spa usually has some pretty good deals. It's not as nice as Grand Geneva, but it is still a nice place. There's also bed & breakfast places in LG.

The boat tours in LG are nice too.

Door County, WI would also be a great place to visit during fall time for the colors.

St Louis has a lot to offer and it would be about 5 hr drive for you, S I-55 all the way. the St Louis zoo is amazing, one of my fav places. There is also the sciece museum and planetarium. Tour the Busch brewery or Grant Farm. Forest park is amazing. All are free. Check out this website

You can catch a cardinals game, ride up the arch (it sways on windy days!) or visit casinos downtown on laclede's landing. Hotels are pretty reasonable - but I am only an hour and half away, so don't normally stay overnite. I would never live in the city though, if you get to far away from downtown or forest park, it can get a little scary. And don't cross the river into east st louis!

I would suggest Southern Illinois. Just outside Carbondale, you can find the beautiful Shawnee National Forest, with many outdoor activities. There are also wine trails throughout the area, for some good wine tastings and homemade local meals. Its roughly a 6 hour drive from Chicago.

It's a 7 hour drive from Nashville to Chicago, too bad it's a little farther to the Smokey Mountains
