I have four tables in my kitchen right now, and four more tables I haven't put together yet in one of my spare rooms. Two of the tables in my kitchen are full-sized dining tables.

Everyone keeps giving me tables.

The next time tell them politely that in interior commission has tabled the acquiring of any more tables.

Yes, and then she returned him (much like I would like to do at times!)

I'm more of the "take everything anybody offers & sort it all out later" mindset. I figure worst case, I make a few trips to Goodwill & get a few more dollars in tax deductions. Dontknow

I do have a dresser & a nice desk coming in a couple of weeks from the same guy who gave me 6 of these tables. Which is good because right now my clothes are living on a bookcase. laugh out loud One thing I'm not out of is space to store all this stuff!

I decided today that I'm not doing anything with the yard this year. There is too much to do inside for me to spend much time outside. Plus I want to take my time & plan my garden & orchard out really well. But the weather was really, really nice today so I spent all day working inside while looking out the windows wishing I could work outside. laugh out loud

VQ (and maybe AM),

Can you suggest a book for me? I read a sci fi book that had just a touch of romance in it. I'm not a sci fi fan and I'm not a romance fan, but these two mixed worked out really well. I like more realistic sci fi if that makes sense (like a combination of what we really see now and what could be. Maybe they're all like that, but I have no experience with sci fi). Any ideas of what I can get started in that won't leave me feeling overwhelmed? I'm kind of a picky reader and I'll stop reading a book after a page if it doesn't catch my interest fast enough.

I am SO farking annoyed right now. I swear, I have the most farked up family that it is almost laughable. Almost all of my family lives in the same (small!) town as me and yet, only 1 of my family members acknowledged that I graduated with my master's. Even my siblings couldn't make a 30 second phone call to say congrats (or even fark you. I would have settled for that.) But, God forbid I miss so much as a birthday party I am in hot water and they won't speak to me for months.

Time to look for a job out of Michigan.

Dies the Fire [amazon.com] by S.M. Stirling.

One day out of nowhere everything electrical stops working. Straight-up just stops. No explanation. Chaos ensues. Little groups of people with real-world skills (along with a few RenFaire types) gather together to survive.

The best part is, Stirling's still writing the series. He's up to book five or six now. Great stuff.

I know (and approve of the fact that) AM's a huge Heinlein fan but I'm not sure how "accessible" his sci-fi is... to be honest sometimes his explanations are a bit past me & even in his "juveniles" like Have Spacesuit Will Travel [amazon.com] I'm a little lost at how his characters figure things out (see my siggy for an example of RAH's attitude). That said, the one I linked there is outstanding & while it doesn't have the romance, it's a cool story.

My ex-wife was the same way about sci-fi/fantasy: if it was too wild she couldn't get into it... that said, she enjoyed Anne McCaffrey's books a lot (which surprised me). You might try Dragonsong [amazon.com] & if you like it, continue with the Harper Hall trilogy and move on to the rest of her Pern books. There are dozens & the ex read them all. The White Dragon [amazon.com] is another favorite but I wouldn't read it until you've decided whether you like Pern or not & have finished the Harper Hall books - just for an understanding of the way her universe works.

I'm having trouble thinking of more sci-fi with anything romantic - it's not typically a "feature" of the genre - but if I think of anything I'll post it back here. Let me know what you think of those suggestions so I can tailor future ones for you.

woot Love getting more people reading sci-fi (and fantasy)! Whee

Doh How could I forget Tom Holt!

metoday if you're like my ex then you'd like Holt too. Start with The Portable Door [amazon.com] and then pick up whatever you can find by him. He's my 2nd favorite British author behind Terry Pratchett (& I'm not recommending Pterry to you b/c his fantasy is pretty far out there - that, and the puns laugh out loud ).

Scratchchin Thinking of what else I gave the ex to read that she liked... she got really into Stirling's books (first one I linked in my last post) and actually fought me for the newest ones (but I read fast enough that I always got to them before she finished whatever she was reading when we bought them). You might also like Jim Butcher (never got a chance to give him to the ex but she probably would've liked his stuff too). Try Storm Front [jim-butcher.com] and see what you think. They tried to make a TV series on the SyFy channel but it didn't really fly, which is too bad. It's a good series.

Awesome! Thanks!! hug

This [stepheniemeyer.com] is the book that got me interested in the genre. (Note that I've never read one of the Twilight books and have no idea how her writing is in those compared to this one, but I was hooked.)

Hmm. I typically have violent seizures & go temporarily blind when I consider the giant ball of failure that is StephEnie Meyer but if it gets you reading sci-fi I'll look past that. BTW that idea's been done before [amazon.com] Wink Octavia Butler's awesome & definitely belongs on the list of recommendations too. nod Mind of My Mind [amazon.com] blew my... mind. laugh out loud
