The word 'rape'

3,834 187 May 29, 2011 at 07:26 AM in Question
Some of you have already read this because I posted this on my fb status but I feel like its worth repeating. We bought (financed) a mattress today and the guy who was selling it to us told us to make sure to pay it off before the interest free period ends because "They will rape you, they will absolutely rape you, they won't even take you to dinner first."
Was that okay for him to say? I thought it was unprofessional and I personally would never use the word rape in every day context like that. It takes away from the severity of the meaning.

Who was that comedian who joked that he loved seeing white people try to sing rap songs that got stuck in their head because they never knew what to do when the N word came up? laugh out loud So true.
I don't know the comedian, but I've been faced with that issue... and I don't really like rap on the whole.

Chris Rock. And for the white people who don't know, he said it's ok to say it then. So, everyone, enjoy your rap.

What about terms like "gypped", or "vandal", or "Indian giver" that were at one point (or are) derogatory, ethnic slurs that are used fairly commonly in society today?

What about the fact that "ghetto" is used so frequently now? Words change. Maybe instead of trying to get everyone to forget what "retarded" means, you break the association between the mentally challenged and the word. Shoving it in people's faces does not do this.

For what? Expressing an opinion about the topic at hand, in a topic made for discussing such opinions?

Why not not visit the thread if the discourse offends you?

Are there even gypsies around any more? Do actual ghettos still exist? Developmentally disabled people do. They were dealt a rough enough hand as it is without people making a mockery of them.

Yes, gypsies are still around. Ignorant, much? Does "ghetto" not still refer to the places Jews were forced to stay back during the Holocaust?

Wow.

Guess so.

Really all it comes down to is whether you care if you're offending people. Like it or not, words have positive and negative connotations. They can build people up or break them down. Whether you care about that is entirely up to you. I've never had anyone be offended if I use the phrase, "I was gypped." If I did, I would probably rethink my use of that word. People do get offended by "raped" or "retarded." I personally don't think "fark" is very offensive if you just look at it's plain definition. However, connotation has made it so. Yes, words evolve. You are right about that. Until it does, though, consider whether it's offensive to people before using it.

I do care about offending people. Practically, I'm not gonna go around talking about all the "retard gay censored cats". I know that people get offended by words. I just think that it shouldn't necessarily be that way. I just hope that more people will understand the train of thought I'm encouraging, and it will lead to less hostilities due to mere words.

There will always be words that are taking as offensive. Saying anything that you want to say and when you want to say it, will always risk the chance of offending someone. If you are using offensive words to them. You would be better off asking for world peace. Because that would be just as likely.

rayzac taught me that lesson years ago and he has been one of my favorites here ever since Big Grin
