The word 'rape'

Question
Some of you have already read this because I posted this on my fb status but I feel like its worth repeating. We bought (financed) a mattress today and the guy who was selling it to us told us to make sure to pay it off before the interest free period ends because "They will rape you, they will absolutely rape you, they won't even take you to dinner first."
Was that okay for him to say? I thought it was unprofessional and I personally would never use the word rape in every day context like that. It takes away from the severity of the meaning.

Who was that comedian who joked that he loved seeing white people try to sing rap songs that got stuck in their head because they never knew what to do when the N word came up?
"If its Christmas Eve, And between 4:40 to 4:49 AM, And your walking into Toys Are Us to get the last transponder doll for your daughter, and just before you enter a black person smacks u with a brick stomps u in the face, riverdances on your head, takes your money, pisses on you and and runs away, You can say, SOMEBODY STOP THAT... !
What about the fact that "ghetto" is used so frequently now? Words change. Maybe instead of trying to get everyone to forget what "retarded" means, you break the association between the mentally challenged and the word. Shoving it in people's faces does not do this.

Why not not visit the thread if the discourse offends you?

Wow.
Wow.
Really all it comes down to is whether you care if you're offending people. Like it or not, words have positive and negative connotations. They can build people up or break them down. Whether you care about that is entirely up to you. I've never had anyone be offended if I use the phrase, "I was gypped." If I did, I would probably rethink my use of that word. People do get offended by "raped" or "retarded." I personally don't think "fark" is very offensive if you just look at it's plain definition. However, connotation has made it so. Yes, words evolve. You are right about that. Until it does, though, consider whether it's offensive to people before using it.
