Iagree so i just use very, very little. rarely drink soda. i almost always just get tap water at restaurants. rarely drink coffee but when i do i use real sugar. i drink tea plain. i don't bake so it literally takes yrs to go thru a 5lb bag of sugar.

i'd also rather use real butter. i read somewhere that the human body knows how to process animal fats but doesn't know what to do w/ manmade chemicals like trans fats (margarine) and doesn't know how to process it and get rid of it so it builds up in the arteries and causes athersclerosis and also irritates the liver.

I tried a Pioneer Woman recipe tonight and it was so good! It was a lot of prep, but fun and very easy. The pic is DH's plate, he said it's a keeper and then went for seconds.

Pioneer Woman BEEF WITH PEPPERS [thepioneerwoman.com]

Attachment 551307

Tomorrow is our wedding anniversary so DH said we're going out to dinner. Not sure where yet, but he's a meat eater and probably wants a good steak.

Glad you got a laugh out loud with the notion of my son doing something potentially fatal. Bigeye

Thismom, went to HyVee last night, didn't find the non dairy stuff but did find some decent blinkies and an entire $10 Keurig TP Whee

Love2B, I picked up 3 PF tonight and no GC prompt. 2 bronzers and 1 mascara.

I've coupon shopped 3 times since Noah was born and we had a lot of groceries on the shoppig list, not to mention all of the new food that doesn't have milk or soy in it made for nearly 2 carts full. Cashier said I should apply for EC. Nono I don't have cable and have never seen an episode. laugh out loud

Maybe you could do a rain check and get some qs.

I haven't done many of those deals lately. When they go good, they are really really good. But when they go bad. Ugh!

I did get Walmart to PM the Clean and Clear though. One time went quick. One time took forever.

I don't know why I never thought about stevia.. Does it leave any after taste, I felt it happened with splenda… Only recently I was thinking I am consuming too much sugar and was thinking about the alterative when all the peeps here were talking about sugar free syrup…
We use unsulphured molasses with our smoothie. I am not sure if I want to add molasses to my coffee. Now every time I grab a drink my mom is nudging me to go down with my sugar intake…

......
well molasses has sugars also, just natural sugar.

aftertaste... depending on the brand you buy. look for stevia powder/pills (white) with the highest "rebaudiosides a" concentrate.
essentially there are 2 main components in a stevia leaf that give it its sweetness. one has a slight bitter aftertaste, the other doesn't. so if you look for a stevia extract with the highest proportion of that non-bitter compound you'll get sweetness without bitterness.

if only life were this simple. laugh out loud

here are 2 sites (promoting their own stevia extracts) that explain the basic background:

site 1 [herb-care.com]
site 2
[wordpress.com]

Quote from gt6mk31 :
Please don't think I am trying to convince you to use any kind of artificial sweetener, that's not the case; but, Splenda is not aspartame. They are two different sweeteners.

My opinion -- and it's just that, an opinion -- is that sugar is far better for us than any artificial sweetener as long as it isn't causing a weight problem. I drink diet pop, I use Splenda so I'm not a fake sweetener hater -- but I am also overweight. It is simply one way for me to cut carbs and calories.
I wholeheartedly agree. It's the whole moderation. Pure clean sugar (not sugar that is bleached and filled with chemicals) is something that the body knows what to do with. And if we consume it in keeping with our activity levels, we are fine.

Splenda is sucralose - a modified sugar molecule. They changed the molecule so that it is not digestable by the body and passes through without adding any calories. Problem: some people get gas, bloating, cramps, nausea with it much like they do with Olestra (fake fat - remember those potato chips and how people started getting explosive episodes, shall we say?) . It is an artificial sweetener, still, and it's effects aren't fully known. But supposedly it is safer than saccharin and aspartame and such.

Quote from calistyle :
I like stevia and have been using it on-and-off for years, but I still haven't found my favorite brand. Is there any particular one that you like better than the rest?

It can have a slightly bitter aftertaste but I still like it. Dontknow
You know I don't sweeten beverages at all, so I don't get any sugar substitutes. I used to once upon a time use Equal for Iced Tea every once in a while but stopped after learning how bad it is for you. I just use sugar when I want something sweet.

But, the times that we have gotten Stevia, I have simply looked for the white powder (not the dried leaf, which is bitter) and then looked for the % of the sweetening compounds as I mentioned above. If you're getting bitterness, it's from the "s-compounds".

Quote from SLickCate :
I don't remember what Kay is trying to sweeten, but would Agave Nectar work? It's organic and sweet and supposed to be pretty good. I've only had it in margaritas laugh out loud , but someone said they even use it on pancakes and oatmeal.

.....

Tomorrow is our wedding anniversary so DH said we're going out to dinner. Not sure where yet, but he's a meat eater and probably wants a good steak.

first CONGRATS on wedding anniversary! I hope you both have a love-filled day! heart

second agave nectar should work just fine. it's a great product and a great idea! as would Lyle's Golden Syrup (it's a British product - cane sugar syrup). Doesn't have a distinct taste like molasses.

but again, let's be clear: maple syrup, molasses, Golden syrup, agave nectar, all of these are just naturally occurring sugar syrups. It's just molten sugar, but found in a plant and not dried and crystallized by humans. that's all. you're still upping your glucose intake. so if cutting back on sugar is the goal, then none of these work.

it's no different than saying i am trying to cut down on my sodium intake so instead of using table salt, i am using Himalayan rock salt, or better yet, i'll just add sea water to my cauliflower to boil it. Stick Out Tongue

kay was looking for something to sweeten tea, coffee and milk.
things that worked for me back when i was drinking caffeinated stuff (no more caffiene thanks to migraines EEK! mornings took a lot retraining for me):

1. i started using flavored coffee beans/flavored ground coffee instead of plain coffee. hazelnut flavor. chocolate raspberry. mocha vanilla. the flavors imparted a slight sweetness to the coffee and cut back on any coffee bitterness.

2. experiment with different roasts and different blends. each really does have a different flavor. for example, i loved the starbucks pike's peak blend. it's well rounded and mild.

3. don't overbrew - it will make your coffee bitter.

4. for tea, i switched to teas like earl grey instead of just the plain old black tea. or pick a fragrant green tea. or try something like constant comment which is spiced and the cinnamon flavors add enough flavor that you don't need sugar. if you're drinking indian chai tea mixes, and want sugar with that, well hey, atleast now it's only sugar in 1 cup of tea. Big Grin

5. okay, i hate milk from years of being forced to drink it while I was lactose intolerant, and the mere thought of it is making me nauseous. but seriously, when I was little and mum made us drink milk, since I constantly gagged on the taste and smell, she had put things in it to help. spiced milk (with a little powdered ginger, or powdered allspice) helped. milk with cocoa powder was another option. you could also get no sugar added chocolate with a high cocoa content (it's good for you Big Grin ) and put a couple of pieces into hot milk. the chocolate melts and well you have choc milk :yum: another option - try hazelnut or vanilla extract, or some crushed vanilla bean, or hazelnut flour (powdered hazelnuts). will give it a wonderful nutty taste.

6. you could always drink your milk this way:

1 part frangelico
1 part chambord
2 parts cold milk
blend serve "nuts and berries" over ice. it is my favorite drink. Big Grin

or perhaps with a generous swig of kahlua?

Cheers

p.s. how did we go from talk of stevia to cocktails?

Looks yummy. Congrats on anniversary.

I made Pioneer Woman Chicken Spaghetti yesterday. I divided in two casseroles and froze one. We liked it. I like most of her recipes.

Monday, Monday... Gonna wait a little bit before I head to town. I'd like to stop at a couple consignment stores and Schwesers and see if I can find a few things. Yes, I know Schwesers is mostly an old lady store but they do have a few cute things now and then and you have to remember where I live. They don't open til 10 and the library doesn't open til 9:30 and my other stops don't take that long.

I am way beyond ready to fish. We went to check out an old bridge area out by the river last night and there was a guy there fishing with a little boy. DH was talking to him and the guy was just ignoring his pole and their bobbers weren't on right. Either something in the river hit his line or he had one heck of a bite and he just ignored it . Never even checked it his bait, nothing. It was driving me NUTS but I didn't really figure I should grab his fishing pole and start fishing with it.

Cate -- Happy Anniversary!

I only use real butter too and they can damn well quit raising the price. I'm still trying to figure out why they dye margarine bright yellow.

Do ya think I'll ever quit reading TP as toilet paper instead of tear pad? Is this coupon for the machine or the coffee and do I need to look for it for anybody?

thanks for posting this! I also got free paint last year. still trying to get the site to load this morning. Can use some new paint for our new house. Speaking of which, we are finally getting to start looking for a new house! Now that there is a tenant moved in, we can show that as income and hopefully a lender will be willing to work with us. Pray

GG: Did you get my email last night?

Little man is the nakedest babeh I have ever seen. I have to put a diaper on, then a pull-up, and then some underwear to keep him from undressing himself every.2.minutes. Although, he has peed in the potty at least once every day for the last week...I swear he will PT way before big brother.
