All the ones around here are almost totally empty, but now they pulled the Q we will have to wait a few days and the displays will be overstocked again and the perfect hiding place. Wink

So awesome! Thank you for this info.
Background - increasing BSODs which worked up to previous crash. I opened it up, & reseated the memory sticks (saw the idea online), & that or something else I did while in there got 'er running again. BSODs slowly increased again & another crash. Memory reseat didn't work this time - so it's currently not booting at all (it's looking for something in the CD/DVD drive & beeping). I do have restore disks, but can't afford to lose some of the data I have on there, so I'm not currently using that option.
I haven't messed w/ it much this time, bc of the YS.
I do have an external drive hooked up to it which contains a recent backup. If I do not get it to come on, I guess I'll hook it to another computer & install windows on it, so I can boot from that.
Bottom line, I think my OS got somewhat corrupt. If I get the bugger running, can I install Win 7 (it's Vista now) & not lose any data? I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but I need to hear someone say it Stick Out Tongue. I have stuff on there that I have to use as evidence in a hearing & can't afford to jeopardize it.
Since you need to hear it: If I understand what you are asking, you would only be able to install win 7 and not lose your data if you were installing it on a separate partition. Because if you install it on your old hard drive, you're basically reformatting the drive and putting the OS on top of it. You'd be wiping out the drive. If you're installing it on the backup drive, same thing, unless the drive is big enough that you can have two partitions and run them as separate drives with separate OS. Is that what you are asking? Confused

Blue Screen of Death at Windows bootup is an indication of a serious error somewhere. Could be a memory problem, could be an Operating System corruption problem. I sincerely doubt it has anything to do with physically seating the memory sticks - after all nothing had any reason to move prior to this, right? It's not like you violently shook the computer while riding a rollercoaster in an earthquake or something, right? did you install something in the past few days or delete any program in the past few days? did you get any malware that you know of or did you see signs of having any malware? what's the malware history of this machine?

Very first thing I would do: All the most critical files you have on that backup hard drive - burn them onto CDs. and make backups of backups. If your OS was corrupted by a rootkit virus, it's likely your backup drive has it too and you don't want these crashes to repeat themselves there. Act on the assumption that everything you have on the main drive is essentially lost - for all intents and purposes it is right now, since it is not accessible. So if the backup drive is identical or almost identical, your first and most critical priority should be to secure that data, knowing how critical it is to you legally.

Now, to your machine:

1. If it's looking for a cd/dvd drive, it's trying to bootup from that drive. do you have a bootable win xp cd? what happens if you try booting from that?

2. have you tried booting up in safe mode (press and hold down f8 intermittently during boot up and before the windows splash screen comes up)? what happens? if it doesn't do that, have you tried the 'last known configuration' option and what happens then? does it go into safe mode?

3. once in safe mode, have you tried running chkdsk so it can check for the integrity of the drive and repair any critical disk errors?

4. do you have a memory checking program? if you have 4gb of RAM or less and an x86 based processor, you could use the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool (available online through Microsoft's Online Crash Analysis site). Burn it onto a bootable CD or DVD and run it from there to check for memory errors/bad memory sectors. If the specs don't match that utility, find another reliable memory check utility online, make a bootable disk and run a memory check.

5. if you do manage to get the drive to boot and run in safe mode, it might be worth getting a rootkit virus removal tool and running that, just to be sure.

finally next time you get the BSOD, if you, note down the error codes. those are critical in diagnosing the issue.

you're going to have to isolate the cause before you do any fixes. so i wouldn't recommend playing with memory stick positioning any further cos that might leave you with more memory errors if bad memory is indeed the problem.

your fixes could be as simple as repairing a bad sector in the disk drive, then getting a new drive as soon as possible. or replacing a bad memory stick. or removing a rootkit. lots of things give BSODs. for example, my sister installed IE9 on her win7 machine. the machine went NUTS. BSOD after BSOD after BSOD. she rolled it back. ahhhhhh, radio silence.

sorry for all the hassle you're going through.

Tornados here too. Joplin Mo was hit very hard. They are showing the damage on National Weather Channel. We are about 30 miles from there. Just happened about 1-2hrs ago. So far I heard that Walmart, Walgreens, St. Johns Hospital, lots of small business, dr. offices and homes were leveled. So sad to see the pictures as we had just drove thru that part of town and was shopping at about 3:00 this afternoon. Had no idea we were even in for severe weather today.

Absolutely nothing to do with this but...

I wanted to thank you for your suggestion on the Dr. Bronner's Baby Wash! I am sold. I bought a bottle @ T the other day. My face is less red, while there are still bumps the redness had greatly reduced. I also had various areas of dry skin and they have almost disappeared in 2 days! bouncebounce Thanks sooo much!

Thanks. B-inlaw and cousins are going to help. They are on our local Fire Dept. My sisters' M-inlaw works at the hospital that was hit and they are trying to get ahold of her now...so far have not heard from her.

OMG...just heard more reports of other areas in that town that were destroyed. High school, Academy, Sonic...Soo many houses and families that are affected.

MelinMO is in the path of these storms...Please pray that she is okay.

I am so glad to hear that! that's been my exact experience. my face just feels calmer. and so does the dry skin on my legs. no more itchiness, no texas drought land like appearance when the light hits it right! bounce

my next project: trying the Aubrey Organics Body Lotion. My sis sweetly got me two small sample tubs from WF. One is Almond, the other is Evening Primrose. They both have a very gentle scent, no artificial fragrances, no potent essential oils that bother me.

Will report back!

weather channel is reporting concerns of a possible explosion at St. John's Hospital. Please tell your family to be careful as they go out as first responders. Sounds stupid to say, I know, but... they're your family. hug
They're calling for more police, ems and fire from other areas. But the radar shows more storms in your region, so... not good.

Prayers for MelinMo and all other SD'ers and non SD'ers in storm's path.

Glad you're ok, I hadn't heard of this tornado until your post. Turned on the weather channel, I love their HD coverage, especially on breaking news/weather stories.

I've only been to T a handful of times this month but I always check the clearance shoes hoping to scoop up Champions on clearance for less than $5 with the TQs. At all three Ts the Trim Step Shape up Shoes have been on clearance for $13.98 at 50% off with a pretty good selection of sizes still left. I bought me a pair about three weeks ago and it has been SO freaking COLD and rainy that I have only been taking my walks in them for about a week and I think they do help. I am more sore from walking two miles with my jogging stroller than going for 3 to 5 miles on my elliptical. I can feel it the thigh/saddlebag area the most which is where the worst jiggles are. Those of you who are interested in them, look for them asap.

Just checking in! I'm all good. It looked dicey for Springfield for a while, but the storms all moved south before they got here and we just had a lot of lightening. We're feeling some incredibly mixed emotions right now. We're so lucky, but so incredibly sad for the Joplin community. It's really horrible there. My husband's g-ma lives really close to the hospital, but we were able to finally get her on the phone and she's ok. She has house damage, but when we talked to her she didn't know the extent of it. Cell phone service is intermittent at best, so we were lucky to get through to her.

Thanks for worrying about me. Keep sending lots and lots of prayers toward Joplin!
