I am Shocking twitching over here. My darling daughter (see avi pic...) rode her bike outside yesterday while I made dinner. What I failed to see is how she used my brand new car as the obstacle in her Tony Hawk course and bounced off of it on both sides with her handle bars and hand brakes.Doh $1134.00 in damages. On top of dealing with the insurance company, body shop, and rental car company, my grandmother is having major surgery tomorrow and will be in the hospital for the next week or so.
Mama will be having vodkaberry tonight....

we're going to have spicy maple blackened shrimp today or tomorrow (it's a family recipe). yummy

i'm thinking, make some black beans, and a mango-avocado salsa and we can have wonderful lettuce fajitas with romaine leaves. low carb, high fiber, high protein, plus lots of nutrients, and lots of delish.
I want that recipe too!!! I would love that entire meal Smilie

hey all!! Depressing day yesterday... the house offer was rejected and they didn't counter offer... which sucks!! I would of liked it to go through...we placed another offer (non-offically) to see what they think... BUT I am not sure how it will go... saddened I guess LOL
I can't believe they didn't even counter after how long that house has sat on the market!!

My rant for the day: There is this girl I went to HS with who at the time, was not prettiest girl in the world. (that is speaking nicely about her) So, after graduation she went and had about 10 plastic surgery procedures, got a tan and somehow got her picture in Playboy (some hometown hotties spread or something like that) This was 15 years ago. She hasn't done anything else to garner any "fame." In fact, she works in a tanning salon in our hometown. But she really thinks she is hot shit. I mean, posting risque photos of herself, leaving snarky comments on fellow classmates' FB pages, and generally acting like a total wannabe loser. Sorry, this might seem petty or stupid, but boy, it drives me crazy. Like this morning, she posted a photo of herself in a playboy bunny outfit walking around outside. I unfriended her after that.

Horsefly? And no, you don't need horses around for those buggers. Hope you get some relief soon hug
I had to delete people too. Some people just get crazier with age. It's a shame you already de-friended her...she was about to be FB stalked Roll

You can tell that this is not a mosquito bite. Way to big for that. It's rash(y).

I would un-friend her as well. Humility is hard to come by these days!

DH said horsefly as well. I felt the pain when it happened and there was some blood. Is there anything I need to be concerned about, disease wise, if you happen to know. Thank you.

I thought to myself..self..if this is what is going to happen when taking care of the babies, well the babies are going to have to suffer, cause momma doesn't like pain...however all my babies are planted and looking good. Today DH and I went out on the porch and we admired our handy work...lol..snobby I know, but it was a feeling of accomplishment.

I guess there is information out there stating it's possible for horseflies to transmit diseases. But, I have been bitten by them lots of times over my life and experienced nothing more than discomfort. I hate them. It was my least favorite part about swimming. They would circle around the pool waiting for you to come up for air. Annoyed

Oh... Bunnies!

I keep meaning to ask if it could be a spider bite, a paper wasp bite, or a bee sting? I second the benadryl option - maybe even double up if you don't have to drive anywhere. If it gets worse and changes to purply/black or you get red lines up your arm then you should go to a doc immediately.

Also, I am supposed to tell you that Mavis likes blueberry cake a lot. Big Grin

Thank you. It makes me feel better that you have been bitten and survived! I'm sorry you got bitten though.

Just got done reading back a few pages...I am sorry to hear about your grand-dad. My prayers will be with him and your family...hugs.

It wasn't a wasp..it's not that type of bite/sting, it feels different.
Was not a bee..as I would have had an allergic reaction and have had to be taken to the hospital.

I surmise it could be a spider bite, but, I wasn't outside that long. I was planting and a storm was coming in and I was not standing still for a spider to come a creeping.

I will keep an eye on it for red lines and purply colors. No benadryl for me. I would pass out for the rest of the day. This is not an option until tonight.

Thanks for the support my favorite peeps. I will stop worrying as much as I have been.

Bunnies, I am willing to bet it was a horse fly, especially since you said a storm is coming in. They tend to be much more aggressive right before a storm. Do you have calamine lotion?

No calamine lotion. I figure...if I just lived through poison ivy without scratching, I can live through this as well. Mind over matter. I haven't scratched it yet, but I gotta tell ya, it is itchy, I think more so then the poison ivy.

somebody please just shoot me.
i just got a call back from physical therapy. have the PCP referral but now they are saying the orthopedist's prescription has expired!! she said, go get a new prescription. he's away.

Head Bang

right now the earliest appointment for an evaluation (let alone therapy) is not for another 3 weeks. 3 weeks? But since I don't have a valid prescription anymore she's not sure she can even book that.

when will I get to walk without pain and hobbling again.
i want to scream.

Quote from slowtech :
hey, you can't throw that out there w/o sharing!!!

i have shrimp in the freezer, thanks to target and maple syrup, thanks to amazon.

you can't tease me like that.
BLACKENED MAPLE SHRIMP RECIPE
put 1lb shrimp in a bowl of cold water and let it sit for a while till it defrosts but is still chilly.
(i use peeled, deveined shrimp, just tail on. if yours is not peeled, make sure you do that, cos the fun is in eating the shrimp with the caramelized maple syrup clinging to the meat).

in another bowl mix up:
2 tablespoons maple syrup,
3 cloves crushed garlic (paste),
1/2 tablespoon spicy spanish paprika,
1/2 tablespoon sweet spanish paprika,
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

We always taste this mixture to make sure it has the right balance of sweet, spicy, tangy etc. if not, we adjust and add some more maple syrup.

Once defrosted, drain the shrimp, squeeze out any excess water, then pat dry.
In a bowl combine the shrimp with 2 tablespoons oilive oil. toss to coat well.

Then put the shrimp in maple syrup mixture, tossing to coat. marinate for 10 minutes.

heat a heavy bottomed stainless steel pan on medium heat. put in the shrimp in the pan and saute until the shrimp are opaque, and the maple syrup mixture caramalized about 6-8 minutes. transfer to bowl. scrape any mixture that is stuck to pan bottom and put in serving bowl (this stuff is uber delicious - looks blackened, but is not charred, just dark).

will take just a few minutes.

you can have it with a fresh salsa and some salad greens for a light meal.
or with seasoned grilled veggies and some brown rice.
or as the filling for fajitas or soft tacos
theoretically also in a quesadilla or burrito, but we find that shrimp are so full of delicious flavor, it's best to eat them unmasked without layers of heavy cheese etc.

thank you for the good wishes, sweets. long, tiring road this has been. but it'll make me a better person somewhere along the way, right? and perhaps eventually when I drop all this post accident weight and get mobility back, it might even make me healthier cos i know i will hit the gym HARD as soon as i am able.

chicken... try this recipe [foodnetwork.com] if you feel like it. super easy to make. i made it a few weeks ago - was very, very delicious. light, crunchy, baked, with yummy lemon sauce on the side. will pair very nicely with the asparagus. i love asparagus too.

spider
tick
blackfly

would be my 3 guesses.

do you have a homeopathic pharmacy or natural foods store anywhere near you? if so just get some calendula tincture (it's an extract of the calendula flower) - powerful disinfectant, wound healer, antibacterial. no side effects. should get it to subside in just a couple of days.

the "hurt" part - the pain, that is - is likely just from the swelling/stiffness. if you have any unscented aloe gel at home, that will help with the itching.

infection - try not to scratch it, no matter how itchy. and certainly not with dirty hands. where you have an opening cos of the bite, you are more likely to get it infected if you scratch.

i personally wouldn't be annoyed. i'd feel sad for her. but then again, it takes a lot to get me irritated/annoyed/mad.
one has to be pretty insecure, feeling pretty empty about things, to feel the need to a) attack people on the internet and b) walk around in a bunny costume when it isn't easter or halloween. (our bunnies doesn't count, cos well, she's really a bunny. that ain't no costume. Stick Out Tongue )

so i too would have unfriended her ASAP - she just lost any semblance of credibility/normalcy she had. and then knowing how I react, I would likely have just laughed it off and moved along. sad, really sad. but I can totally see how it gets under your skin.

bunnies, meant to say, i'm allergic to blackfly bites, and the reax you describe is what happens to me initially. then all the blue purple nonsense arrives.

i once had so many bluefly bites on my legs (mem day weekend 2004) my legs were completely swollen, and stiff and blue and purple from thigh to ankle. hideous. but eventually it dissipated.

this is prime black fly season for northern new england. AND plus, there's a reason they call no-see-um's: they get you before you see em.

I HATE EM.

greenie, it seems like you just can't catch a break! I am sorry. Hopefully she will book the appointment and you can get the script faxed over as soon as the doc gets back. Hugs.

I do have aloe, bunnies swears by aloe for minor burns. When I get a burn boo-boo, I put aloe on it every few minutes and by the morning, it's gone, or at least no longer painful at all. bunnies is mentally strong and will not scratch.

I certainly hope it was not that! I imagine that because I was so active, moving around and such it would have been rather hard for the little critter to crawl up me without me noticing. I had on shorts. I have heard that brown recluse are very dangerous.
