Reporting in, or LOL kitty made me sad #########Just got home from the ER - post 62######### (((((new photo post 83)))))

Some of you may remember this thread from two years ago. Well, he got me again. This time he got my finger on the other hand. I was getting knots out of his fur when he clamped down on the finger (the one you use to tell people they're number one laugh out loud) and when he tried to release and turned his head to jump down, his teeth were stuck in my finger, he couldn't let go. But since he turned his head, he wound up tearing the puncture wounds open even more. Sick

The top joint of my finger is red and swollen. However, I don't see how it could be infected this time, as by tearing the flesh sideways, he made the puncture wounds larger and they bled profusely for about 10 minutes. I applied tons of Bactine spray and then Neosporin to it as well. This happened about six hours ago and so far, the swelling and redness is limited to that top finger joint. So should I go to the after hours clinic or do you think it will be ok?

It's been a long day. Left the house at 11:30 and just got home. Tried to post from there but couldn't remember my password. Annoyed

This morning the finger was hurting as much, if not more, than it was when I went to the urgent care clinic on Wednesday. Got to the ER and got the last vacant room. The doctor took a look at it, ordered some x-rays to make sure furnace kitteh didn't leave part of a tooth (he didn't). The doctor consulted with a hand surgeon and told me the best thing to do would be to slice it open with a deep cut and clean out the puss from the inside. But he warned me it will leave a scar and I might lose some sensation in that finger.

He went ahead and did it, got out all the puss and put a small bit of gauze in the incision to keep the cut open so it can drain for a couple of days. He also gave me an IV of some more powerful antibiotics. I would take a photo but it's all wrapped up at the moment.

Wow ZM... I hope it heals quickly. Comfort

But you're not going to get a lot of sympathy from the Lounge unless you unwrap, take pic, re-wrap.

Don't really do that. Not that you'd listen to me; you're smarter than that.

Left out part, the doc wants me to come back in the morning for another round of the IV antibiotics if my finger isn't any better by then. He also wants me to go see the hand surgeon on Monday or Tuesday, just to play it safe. I suspect that last part is overkill. Now that I've had the big time antibiotics and the wound cleaned out properly, I think it will start getting better.

Oh ZM!!! Wow.
Still could be much worse. A former coworker of mine got bit by her cat in the wrist (of her dominant hand no less). Swelled up so bad she couldn't use the hand. It was infected in the tendons. She spent 3 days in the hospital. But she did recover and has full use/sensation.

I'm sorry I missed this the first time!!! Any cat bite = antibiotics, no matter what. They are funky and they are the only thing that knock DH on his keister as far as work battle wounds go. I hope you got some good antibiotics and are feeling better soon!! Comfort

Yeah. I thought that since it had bled for almost ten minutes before I put pressure on it, that it wouldn't get infected. Silly me, if there is a next time (hopefully not) I'll go straight to the doctor for antibiotics.

Wow, glad she's ok. The doctor said it's much worse if it's in a joint.

Not funny you two! I don't really blame him. He was always a sweet cat and never bit or scratched me when he was younger. But he's 17 now (85 in human years) and is old and grumpy and a bit senile. He can't groom himself as his balance is really bad now that he's old. When he tries to reach his head around to groom, he starts to fall over. So I have to do it for him. I just pushed past his tolerance level this time and he managed to free his head and got my finger.

DH had a thought while we were in the ER. Next time I'm going to put a cone on his head and then, hopefully, he won't be able to bite me. I said you couldn't have thought of this before he bit me!

EEK! Just now seeing this! Hope you are doing better Zoe! I got bit on the arm by a cat a few weeks ago and my whole forearm swelled up. I wasn't sure if there was nerve damage or not as I couldn't move my hand. Was sent to the E/R for IV antibiotics. Cat bites can be very serious. LOL Who knew? Took my arm a good 10 days to feel back to normal. Hope your finger heals quickly! Smilie
