i've had 2 diff types - the first one was like an ultrasound-type wand, and they used the ultrasound gel stuff. i did this on my armpits, and they would glide the laser over the area. that one didn't hurt much (if at all). they did ice the area beforehand tho - it got hot, but wasn't really painful.
the other one (one i'm currently doing for arms/legs due to cheap groupon) is very different. the laser head doesn't touch me at all - instead there's like a little plastic guard through which the laser shoots, about an inch away from my skin. the plastic guard touches my skin. they shoot once, then move the plastic circle, then shoot again. so i don't think it gets all the surface. plus, this one seems to hurt more, but again, it may be bc the leg surface is so big and my leg hairs are super thick and super dark. i think the thicker the hair the more painful it is when they zap it.
anyway, glad it's not painful for you!
When you have really light hair, in order to get it to work, they need a higher setting so the laser can find the hair.
