It's actually the other way. When you have thick hair, you have more pigment, so they can use a lower light setting because the laser can find the hair more easily.

When you have really light hair, in order to get it to work, they need a higher setting so the laser can find the hair.
but when the laser finds the hair and actually zaps the root, ouch! seriously, it only hurt on my legs where there are thick hairs. the places with faint hairs did not hurt at all.

i think the setting depends on your skin. i have darker skin and can handle higher settings, so they've been using max on me for the past few visits. that may also be why it hurt.

how pigmented your hair is determines how effective the LHR is.

oh yeah, definitely. nod they usually do it lighter in the beginning and then increase the level also. but only up to what they think your skin can handle.

I want to go do my area now. She quoted somewhere around 1k for either 6 or 8 treatments plus free touchups for a year. Does that sound like a good price? This is a nice dr's office too. Not one of those sketch ball places.

that sounds like the normal price i think... not a bad price but i wouldn't say an awesome deal. but for a brazilian it sounds decent since they have to get all up in there. laugh out loud

do they ever run specials? i would wait until there's some special (not like a groupon or anything, but at least one of their specials, like b2g1 free or something). or maybe you can just ask them for a discount since you are getting other stuff done there as well.

Alvs, have you seen any groupons in your area? They seem to be all over and are about $150 for six treatments. I'm getting a brazilian, and I paid $139. You're probably better off waiting for one of those.

I asked my laser person why so many groupons for laser hair removal are coming up in so many areas. I check MN and Chicago groupons all the time since I travel all the time. She said it's because in order to get your certification, you need to rack up a certain amount of hours. The spas (where you make the big money) will only hire you if you have a lot of hours. Thus, groupons are good ways for people to get hours and experience, when the chairs may have otherwise been empty. M

Makes sense to me.

Also, I'm really fair...like lighter than the lightest foundation shade of most makeup, and I have extremely light hair. She told me that she had to use an extremely high setting on me in order to even get my hair folicles to react, which they didn't...

I bought my voucher through living social. Otherwise, I would have tried to get a refund. It's too bad it won't work on me

You have to watch the groupons deals and such around here. Some are really sketchy places.

I think I'm just going to get it done here. Dh is all for it laugh out loud.

the ideal skin/hair type for LHR is light-ish skin, dark hair. supposedly there are some machines that work better for light colored hair, but i don't believe it.

so i guess your person probably had to use a higher setting to try to zap the lighter color hairs - but i feel like a really high setting would have been horrible for your skin! i think using the laser is similar to getting a sunburn or something, because they asked me how easily my skin burns when exposed to the sun, and i think they used my answers to gauge how much laser my skin could handle. they also tell you not to get any sun 3 weeks prior and 2 weeks after any laser treatment. so i'm sure it has something to do with how your skin handles light rays.

anyway, you probably felt no pain because it didn't zap any of your hairs! it hurts when it zaps, but at least you know it's working then.

yeah - for my groupon deals i checked the reviews and there were enough good reviews that i went for it. i really liked the 1st place i went. the one i'm going to now you can def tell it's a "budget" place - i would not pay full price for it. (for the first place, i might)

if you're fine with the price and you like/trust the place, go for it. i think it's more important to find a good place - you don't want to go somewhere that leaves you with burns (i've read reviews like that before! scary.). but maybe you could ask if your place does specials and sign up then.

Oh just the opposite, it was extremely painful in some parts. Some of the hairs reacted, but she said not as well as she would have liked. I guess that means all of them didn't or something? I'm going again at the end of the month because I might as well. However, I didn't notice any difference after my first treatment Frown

I wish they would put a disclaimer on these vouchers. I had bought one previously in Chicago, and when I went in, they told me that it wouldn't work and I should request a refund. I figured it was just a sketchy place and the woman was just being mean (since when I went in she had a major attitude problem). I figured it wasn't worth the hassle there.
