Just thought I'd post a random image of a woman that is creating a civil disturbance ... should she be pepper-sprayed??? (or course not, but if this discussion remained on course, it would end up in the Podium!)

So here you go equating this sort of "occupy" activity to the civil rights movement...

Some other guy in this thread tries to tie the police pepper spray incident, to the holocaust...

Have you people lost your minds?

Despite legal or illegal was a peaceful civil act as a protest. In no way should have the police escalate the situation towards the wrong direction. Definitely a wrongful act to instigate the situation from my point of view.

Are you aware that the protesters were informed that the school officials were fine with students protesting on campus? However, camping out on campus was not allowed. So, the students were informed to vacate the area. Most did comply. About 10 ppl remained and they were warned that they would be forcibly removed if they didn't comply.

Now, if the use of pepper spray to immoblize the group to easily arrest them is not right to you, then you can complain about that. However, ppl are bashing the cops for following procedure. And, they're celebrating the fact that the cops may be fired. That's not right in my opinion if they're following written procedure.

the right to peacefully protest does not give you the right to break the law, disobey a lawful order, actively resist arrest, create a civil disturbance, or commit disorderly conduct.

these students were given the opportunity to continue protesting, but all they had to do was not block the pathway. THEY incited this incident. the police came around days before issuing verbal warnings with written notices. the police came that same day and continued to give warnings. the cop walked up to the kids in the human chain and said, hey get off the side walk or we're gonna spray you, and they still chose to remain. the cops tried to pull them away and gave them one more chance, but they again resisted. the cops sprayed them and some people STILL resisted.

Isnt that called being retarded?

"I KNOW MY RIGHTS"

i learned about them from some other kid in this protest, who learned about them on Law and Order!

I'm just curious. For all those ppl who thought the cops were wrong, what do you think cops should do with protesters who don't comply and form a human chain on private property and perhaps block traffic? If they've formed a human chain, it'll be hard to pull them apart without using a lot of force that will probably cause pain and injury. That's the whole point of forming human chains in a protest....that is, it's hard to pull the ppl apart to arrest them individually.

What options do you propose?

First of all, UC Davis is public property. I don't know why you keep on calling it private. Therefore, your analogy of someone protesting in someone else's backyard is meaningless. It's really not that hard to break up the chain. Start at one end with a few cops and pull each person off one at a time. The student will release if enough force is pulled on him by the cops. Pain should only be inflicted if the situation is out of control. The cops have the upper hand here. They got guns, armor, riot gear and crap. If they are feeling afraid for themselves in this situation with a bunch of students protesting, then they shouldn't be cops in the first place.
