Federal prosecutors in Virginia have shut down one of the world's largest file-sharing sites, Megaupload.com, and charged its founder and others with violating piracy laws.
The indictment accuses the company of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content. The indictment was unsealed Thursday, one day after websites shut down in protest of two congressional proposals intended to thwart the online piracy of copyrighted movies and TV programs.

I didn't understand what was in it for Obama or the Democrat party to support PIPA and SOPA. It's kind of like Obama overturning the legislation against domestically slaughtering horses for consumption. I just can't figure out what was in it for Obama.
When I read the article about Hollywood withholding donations from Obama's campaign, it suddenly became quite clear why Obama is for the legislation (which apparently he is now against). Who knows, he'll probably sign SOPA and then say he'll never use it like NDAA or whatever his added comments were for that mess.
Well, somehow, for the past year, Dodd has completely slipped my radar and is now the CEO and Chairman of the MPAA.

edit: typos galore. I need to proofread my stuff more.
2. If someone uses a VHS tape to illegally record the superbowl and play it back for an audience, is Maxell sued? If a drunk driver of a Chevy 1500 runs over a pedestrian, is Chevy responsible, or the driver? This is the same principle.
3. There was NO due process here. The government just decided to ignore the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Amendments by shutting down this website (which isn't even registered in the United States, btw) without any legal proceedings. The government made an accusation and unilaterally took action without a trial. Are you really okay with that?
Apparently Anon is policing the police right now.
I'm all for it, personally. Give the imperial federal government a taste of its own medicine.

It's not like Prohibition at all, because alcohol never should have been banned. Are you trying to say that pirating copyrighted material SHOULDN'T be banned? Nobody actually believes that. You just have to find a better way to do it, because taking away due process and fair use rights is counterproductive.

Record companies and movie studios created this piracy problem for themselves. Over the years they wooed Congress to up the length of time a copyright lasted. Our founding fathers set the original copyright term to 14 years, after which the copyrighted material reverted to the public domain, in order to benefit society. Now Congress says the copyright term limit is 70 years beyond the life of the author or 120 years for materials owned by corporations. So it seems to me that the record companies and movie studios paid Congress to enact laws that allowed them to steal from us.

If jurisdiction is claimed because offending servers are located in the US, then the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Amendments should apply.
Unless, of course, the imperial federal government thinks those pesky amendments just get in the way.
