USAA offers some of the best rates and perks on car rentals in my opinion. Especially for drivers who are 18 to 24, typically saves $25 to $30 per day. I have only used the Hertz discount and it's saved me a lot of money.

This might be YMMV for some as technically you are required to show proof of your USAA membership (debit card) upon getting the car. Just open a USAA Free Checking account (takes about 10 mins) and you are good to go.

Recently did a quote for a 3 month rental from the Denver Airport (going for an internship and am under 24) and they quoted me almost $3600 and with the USAA discount it dropped to $1800!

Have also gotten weekly rentals in Atlanta for about $119 to $125 a week for a full size.

Thanks, I did read the first post, but I was thinking I needed the member number to check prices even with the coupon code. So the only reason to call and ask for a member number is if you actually book using the code?

You got it! Smilie

Actually, the ONLY real reason to get the member number is so that you have PROOF of affiliation, so that when you go to pick up your car, and the agent asks your for proof, you can show him that you are in fact eligible to be using the USAA code.

If you have any other questions- let me know.
Cheers! Wink

Question is how often has anyone experienced having to have proof? I checked rates and this beats any web search engine out there, period so I definitely want in on this one, but I will have to check to see if I even have a USAA bank?

The real question is, are you willing to risk spending a couple of extra hundred dollars, when you're asked for proof and you don't have it, and thus have to take the car at the "walk-in" rate?

I'm not. shake head

So I play it safe. Especially since getting a membership takes all of 5 minutes. Printing out your profile page, to serve as proof, takes 30 seconds. And that's it. nod
I've confirmed with MY budget reps, that a print out of the profile page, that shows my name and membership number would serve as ample proof.

Heck even if your local rep asks you for a Card, getting a debit card is a piece of cake. The checking account can be opened online (needs an opening deposit of minimum $25) in 5 minutes, and the card mailed to you in a week.

I got the debit card for 2 reasons,
A. The most important reason- No ATM usage fees. Can be used at any ATM and USAA will reimburse you the fee. I have a BOA debit card, and this card comes in handy when I need cash on the spot and don't want to drive around looking for a bank of america ATM.
B. the debit card serves as proof. 2 birds with one stone. Big Grin

Edit: P.S- I know of someone who was never asked for proof his entire life, and then one day used a code that he found online that saved him an extra $40-50... Got asked for proof. Lucky for him, that trip was work-related and would be reimbursed..so even though he had to pay an extra $200 or so (the walk-in rate) he got the money back.

I have no one who's going to reimburse me the money, so I'm going to play it safe! Smilie
At the end, it's your call.

So if you go overseas and the bank is taking loads of fees let alone giving a crappy conversion, this card would void those fees? If so, I'm all for it. Even if not, I'm all for it because there's plenty of occasions where one wants to get money out of the bank but has to go to another one either inside that store, local to whatever area, etc. etc.

Thanks for the input and good incentives. If you can tell me more about being overseas and how they work it with atm fees around the globe that'd be great.

Cheers!

You're welcome! Just paying it forward!

I'm not too sure about overseas...But I can call them tomorrow and find out for you.
as long as I don't forget Big Grin

But here's the thing, even if this card offers you a zero fee transaction, you'd still lose money on the conversion rate.
Take my advice. When overseas, use cash. Even with these so called "no foregin transaction fee" credit cards, you'll lose out in the end due to the conversion rate. Mad

And yes, having this card is totally worth it if for nothing else then atleast for the fact that you can use it at ANY ATM in the continental U.S.

Also- if you use USAA for something major, like insurance, investments etc, using their discount code will not only provide you with an additional driver at no cost, it will also provide you with Rental insurance. woot
Uh.... if you have USAA insurance and/or use their credit card you are already covered even if you use costco.

Does renting through them give you anything extra besides letting the wife drive (is that really a good thing? JK!).

Thanks for the info on fluctuations! Next time we will keep watching both a bit longer. Costco keeps on beating the pants off everyone else so perhaps we have become a bit lazy.

When I called to create the account, the CS said you had to be in the military. If you open the checking or saving account, you don't get the full benifit. But I read above, it's said you don't need to open the account. So am I missing something??

I rented cars at Budget and Enterprise over the last month... Worked great for me... Young driver fees waived at both and no verification was asked even though I prepared my profile print-out from USAA website... Saved me hundred of $$... Repped OP!!!

USAA is the Federal Credit Union. If you or either of your parents or some other family member served in the military you are eligible to join. My dad served and because I joined my kids are eligible. The perks are fantastic.
Example. I got my teenage daughter a prepaid debit card that has ZERO fees. I can fund it from my account and she can manage it from her smartphone.

They have a ton of other benefits; Ultra cheap insurance, student loans, car loans, investments. For some of them the person who served in the military has to purchase "a product" and then you are grandfathered in.

The customer service is excellent and if you call they will walk you though the sign up.

Regarding the USAA liability insurance benefit, can you get that by using USAA investment products while not being a member of the military? Are you then still considered a USAA member for the purposes of the car rental liability benefit? Thinking of using USAA investments products for this liability benefit.
