Poll coming

At what age do you think you will be able to retire? I am curious to see how optimistic the SD community is.

SAHM directions Please indicate the age that you think your GTWD (go to work Dad) will be able to retire. I know most of you work hard during the day, but that's not what I am asking about Smilie

Never. I have a full house as it is, and we plan on adopting more. I'd have to be listed as a beneficiary to a lot of wills to be able to afford to retire.
Didn't you get left out of one already?

Well, I will answer this too.
I am lucky to have a decent paying career. Before I am 60, the kids will be gone and the mortgage paid off. I've been doing the 401k thing, but I just don't see how it will be possible to ever retire, until poor health forces it.

When I see the skyrocketing property taxes, healthcare costs, probable insolvency of social security..
I just don't see it happening.

In theory, it's possible to live until 90-100 years old. Maybe not likely, but possible.
401k and IRA savings.. I just don't see how that will be enough to live off of for more than maybe 5 years.

I'm not complaining or saying I should be entitled to anything different.. Just stating my view.. If I am healthy enough to work (and thus be able to actually ENJOY being out of work), it would always be in the back of my mind that I might live too long and end up broke when I was unable to work.

we put back around 30%. you have to put back a lot. no way he could retire and live our lifestyle putting back 10%.

Yeeeeup. Mad

I don't have much money, but I do know how to manage the money I have. I also use to have a lot of money before I gave up what I was good at to do what I got my degree in. My savings got us through a lot we wouldn't have otherwise been able to get through.

I say this because I know how to make my money work for me, and the funny thing is that MIL use to be loaded before the market collapsed. Had she listened to me and my warning and invested like I told her to invest, she would not only still be a very rich woman, but much much richer than she was. Now she's just so so rich. So I tried to save that woman millions, and she writes DW out of her will because we moved. That's quality character right there if you ask me.

She'll probably be broke by the time she passes. She's just trying to manipulate your wife. My mom does the same thing with money. Just not to that extent.

Dh's mom is stupid with money. She drives us crazy. My parents are very stable and smart so it kind of freaks me out. I'm not used to worrying about my parent's finances.

Retire? Why? (And how would I tell if I had? Maybe I'd have to get a job first.)

I think they've already raised the SSI retirement age to 72 for people in my age bracket. I'm sure they'll be severely underfunded due the the baby boomers and raise that even further before I'm a senior. I don't think working until 75 will be unusual then; I think it will be more of the norm.

Way too early in my life to tell. Ideally as soon as possible.

Good point, I probably should've made 75-80 , and 81-85 brackets to vote on.
That was not intentional..

I guess in our grandparents' generation, when they had pensions, it was not uncommon to retire at 65 or earlier. I was wondering how many people still had that vision.

My grandfather retired at 53, lived off his pension until 88 laugh out loud He made out good.

the next decade will tell at least some of it; i don't see our side business growing enough to have us both work on it exclusively, but it might be enough of a boon to our income to make a difference.

i've had long-term investments since i was ~24, have a great 401k matching plan where i work, and am vested in the state retirement plan (granted, for a very small amount), so all that helps.

i'm one of two kids, and my parents have a decent net worth since my grandfather died. my wife is an only child with one parent who, from all indications, has a rather large net worth. it's morbid, but the amount we get in inheritance will probably be the biggest determining factor in when we retire.
