are you happy with your decision of college/major?

i got the idea from this but i'm also bitter about what the perception vs reality is between colleges. in california.. the general thought is you go to a cal state if you can't go to a uc. my sister went to the best uc she could get into (at the time) and hated every minute of it. i went to a uc and hated the major options. after completing the sequence and talking to friends i know i made a horrible mistake.

also, if you're not doing something that requires a degree...maybe its better you just get an associates/trade school cert and avoid the huge debt collge has

edited to say.. this is mostly 2000 + era when the cost of a degree is so large, any college degree won't pay off. it used to be you can get anything and make more than a high school graduate. now paying tons for just the sake of saying you have a degree from a "good" school doesn't pay off.

A degree in art is about two things. You will learn the technical aspects of the medium you choose (camera, throwing and firing clay, etc) but the biggest aspect is that, you learn to think outside the box. You learn to be creative in your thinking concerning any thing you do. So, while the professors are instructing you, it's really up to you as to how you apply that knowledge and how deep you reach to express your thoughts. The cross applications are phnominal because you take problem solving to the next level.
I am a critical thinker. I have to be in my current field. But I need the structure that comes with a proper education.

My buddy is an EE grad but ever since he graduated (2005 or 2006), he's done QA. He hasn't touched any real EE work and probably lost most of the core skills in the field.

Oh ok. Well that is pretty much the goal for the slackers. I'd like a job that challenges me and forces me to use my education but I won't be disappointed with QA. I'll gladly take whatever engineering position I can seeing as I'm coming from a 22k/year job even though its part time.

I'm 29 and just went back to school. I'm going to a community college that is nice and cheap and the pell grant pays for EVERYTHING. I'm trying to keep an eye on classes that'll transfer over to the state school for a bachelors I'm going with electrical and CIS stuff to transfer into computer engineering.

Obviously I will be getting an associates first and evaluating my options for work. If I can get into the right thing I'll just take some night classes.

It really helps to have all of the equipment at your disposal. I have darkroom equipment, a kick wheel and a printing press, but I don't have an actual darkroom, kilns, a print shop and I can't buy all of the chemicals in bulk. Art is about performance. In a drawing class, you have to draw. There's no sleeping in class while your tape recorder takes notes for you. You have to show a body of work twice a semester (at least) Peer to peer critique keeps you from BSing a bunch of rationalizations or throwing a bunch of big words around that will impress a GA. Other students will call you on the carpet, because they have spent the same hours between classes, homework and studio time. There is much discipline to be gained in art.

Even though I'm not working, I'm still glad I went to college. I am really a nerd, but I just dress cute Teehee! My degree is in finance, and y'all should be able to guess where I went laugh out loud. I didn't have student loans. I was lucky with that.

A degree is just a piece of paper that shows your employer you have the necessary discipline and skills to work for their companies. I have had many friends from the engineering department who told me that they only use around 5-10% (maybe less) of what they learned in school for their jobs. So, I wouldn't be surprised if people actually work in a different field than the one they graduated with.

I am an architectural engineer and I am content with my major choice. I was forced to be an engineer anyway since I sucked at everything else in high school... Heck I couldn't even write well when I was in high school nor can I memorize historical facts. Those were just too much for my brain. Hope people are content with their choices! We live vicariously through one another.

He didn't take it because he was trying to slack off. After graduation, he tried looking for a job for nearly 1.5 years before this company hired him. And even then, he went back for a bunch of interviews (I'm guessing somewhere between 5-7 interviews) over the course of 6 months. After that, it still took them some time before he was hired on and QA was the only thing he could get.

During that time, he applied to all sorts of EE jobs in the area and even started applying to non-EE jobs just for the sake of getting a job.

If it wasn't so easy to get loans, the escalating cost of college would ease at least somewhat IMO (Popcorn). I'm very aware of how costs have increased...daughter is about 6 years away from having to consider her options.

Our let you kiddies carry on your discussion. Smilie
yeah its about 6k for a semester at a uc which at least according to the uc's are the model public universities.

i have friends who were way smarter than me and have a harvard degrees. few outside the network consider the price worth it.. and most of them were there on sports scholarships. those who got into ivy's based on smarts didn't use the degree.

computers + medicine. Love informatics, and don't regret getting my degree in it. Booming industry too. I've had friend who did either CS, IT or software engineering and they can't find jobs.

No debt for undergrad, and now applying to master's. Free tuition ftw! Big Grin

ALVS, there are many words with which to describe you, but "nerd" is not one of them.
