I think I got one of those too. My year in the podium, i think I had a warning at least once a month.
As far as balance goes, it's really a matter of just figuring out your groove. Keep in mind that your knees should be slightly bent... beyond that, play around with moving your feet further apart/closer together to see what's more comfortable and try leaning forward a bit. Don't be afraid to hold your arms out, that really helps a lot when you're first starting out! Don't worry about how it looks - being on your feet with your arms out looks a hell of a lot better than being ass over teakettle on the ground.
As you keep practicing you'll get it figured out and your balance will get better.
I ended up ordering another pair of inexpensive skates on Amazon. These are more of a mid boot and they are more of a racing skate with wider wheels. The bearings and trucks are so much better because I'm zooming around the house with alot more ease. They have big toe stops that get in the way of what I want to do so I'm going to see if I can get some plugs for them tomorrow when we go to the rink. DH took one off but with no plug I will tear up the floor.
My Dad saw them today and was a little concerned that it's a mid top because I did sprain my ankle a few weeks ago but I'm going to wear the braces and see how it goes tomorrow. They are just more comfortable in that I feel I can do more with ease. I can skate on one foot - leg up behind me no problem. I had the worst time in the other skates. My Dad is going to order DD's skates tomorrow and I think I'm going to hold off to see if this type will be ok for me. Reidel has some in this style so I may do that instead of the full artistic boot. The nice thing about those is that the stops are adjustable or you can remove them and just get plugs. I want to see if Vanilla has a similar skate also. They are really good too but all I have seen so far is a very low cut.
