That's a terrifying thought. This time of night, it's mostly scary people. EEK!

Well, I don't think people eat it raw, and when you cook it, it emits this sort of gummy slime. Kind of like... rubber cement, a little bit? I don't know, it's just slimy.

My dad's side of the family all live in Louisiana, and every time they make it, that's what it tastes like. It's always in the gumbo, which I do like, but I'll usually avoid the okra in it. laugh out loud

It's not horrible if you fry it... but I figure if you have to fry it to make it taste decent, it's probably not worth it.

EDIT: I guess if you like seaweed, you'll be okay with it. I love most vegetables, but I draw the line at slime. Nono2
it must not be a popular import up here to the Mid Atlantic states laugh out loud
I spend a lot of time in the produce section and pestering farmers at the summer markets, and I've never had my "what's that" answered with Okra laugh out loud

pretty much anything breaded and fried is gonna taste good, laugh out loud

Right?! You could deep fry grass from your yard and it'd probably taste good!

So they were only palatable when you were fried or pickled?

I've had fried okra. I think I ate it in the buffet line of Golden Corral. It wasn't anything special.

Don't we all know some folks who can only be tolerated when we're on some sort of mood-altering substances?

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/pickled

I recall it as a term my parents used for someone who was consistently and perpetually drunk even during the day...
