Why do you have to switch workplaces to get higher raises?

4,841 1,079 March 14, 2012 at 03:33 PM in Computers (4)
It seems so stupid. My current job wants to give me a 2% raise.... on 51k because I'm an "admin" - while others who get paid more then me and have the whole summer off get 3%

Friends are telling me the only way to get more is to switch workplaces. Problem is I really like the job, they just need to pay me!!

Absolutely. The part that really burns me up is that 92% of "admins" here make 100k+, so maybe it's easier for them to absorb 2% but for a young guy trying to move into his own place it's not enough.
Where do you live that 51K is not enough to move on your own?

Sorry, I worked hard at school (k-12 4 years in college and 3 years of masters) and fought even harder to get a job. I wake up and I'm at my desk at 730, do my job and go home, i'm here on my lunch break at the moment. . There's a fine line between being grateful and letting people take advantage of you, while the six figure crew gets lots of money and the 3% crew gets more then you......it's being taken advantage.

We did work out a deal today 2.5% plus cell which actually nets me more then just a 3% raise would, so that's fine for this year. I'll have to battle it out again next year I suppose.
and if you hadnt you would be working a minimum wage job filling customer food orders and bitching about how Wendys pays 17 cents an hour more.

Why is it that because people didnt work for 7 years to go to school they have this sense of entitlement. You had a 7 year holiday good for you.

How do you know that for that extra 500 a year they are not putting in 50 or more hours than you a year and have more experience and education.

Of course there, is. However, I wouldn't be getting worked up about $500 a year. If it's that big a deal, take what you're given and start looking for work elsewhere. Point is, it's a rough economy, not a lot of a jobs, and even loss jobs are actually giving raises. I have a few friends that have taken pay CUTS to just to keep having a job.
It's not just 500 a year. It's that if I accept 2% a year, not only am I not getting Cost of living (3.2 %) but after 5 years it's an 8000 dollar difference.

If I don't stand up for myself who will?

That is assuming that your whining hasnt raised red flags with management when the next round of layoffs comes around.

Maybe if you didnt waste most of your work day on SD youd have gotten more of a raise.

xcuse me? I visited during breaks (lunch, breakfast, we get 20 mins for breakfast since we are required to be in early), before work and then after work.

You are very touchy and sensitive about stuff . Has management commented on this ?

It's touchy and sensitive to be accused of wasting time at work? When I am very careful about that?

My boss is cool and understands how I feel. It's the 1% board members who go home to their 10 million dollar homes who have never EVER been in my situation who need to understand it.

Sounds like you need your job description re-evaluated. Or, if you harass some kids, you'd at least get a paid suspension, through at least five years during multiple-appeals. And you would be able to sit on your couch at home with your hands in your pants, watching the Simpsons or something. Happens in California all the time.

It's funny you say that, just today I was asked to self evaluate my job description, teaching was 48% of my time assuming 1800 hrs of work (yes I get a lot of vacation)

Into a house....or anything near nice..... ? Right outside of NYC sometimes I wonder why my parents even bothered moving here.
