Why do you have to switch workplaces to get higher raises?

4,841 1,079 March 14, 2012 at 03:33 PM in Computers (4)
It seems so stupid. My current job wants to give me a 2% raise.... on 51k because I'm an "admin" - while others who get paid more then me and have the whole summer off get 3%

Friends are telling me the only way to get more is to switch workplaces. Problem is I really like the job, they just need to pay me!!

OP, perhaps you would like to be educated in the real world instead of a classroom? Dontknow

Know your facts. Of the wealthiest 1%, only 9% of their wealth has been inherited [wsj.com].

Quote :
1. According to a study of Federal Reserve data conducted by NYU professor Edward Wolff, for the nation's richest 1%, inherited wealth accounted for only 9% of their net worth in 2001, down from 23% in 1989. (The 2001 number was the latest available.)

2. According to a study by Prince & Associates, less than 10% of today's multi-millionaires cited "inheritance" as their source of wealth.

3. A study by Spectrem Group found that among today's millionaires, inherited wealth accounted for just 2% of their total sources of wealth.

Each of these stats measures slightly different things, yet they all come to the same basic conclusion: Inheritance is not the main driver of today's wealth. The reason we've had a doubling in the number of millionaires and billionaires over the past decade (even adjusted for inflation) is that more of the non-wealthy have become wealthy.

So it's not just that the same old rich folks are getting richer. The more-important shift is that the rich are getting more numerous.

This thread was about changing the acronym OP. It is no longer Original Post or Original Poster. OP now stands for Occupy Posting.

Not really.

I live where the 1% inherit their millions (and the rest cheat people, break laws and get wrapped in fraud) and even though they are total idiots, thanks to wealth managers they don't go bankrupt (well some of them do).

I am very close with someone who knew the Madoff thing was a scam but continued to work closely with the guy and now sits on his millions and millions.

Also - since when is a computer science degree and then a masters in technology something that "didn't matter"
Okay, so then it's not the degree that doesn't matter, it's the career you chose. You obviously didn't choose the line of work you're in for the money.. so why complain when you aren't making what you want to be making?

Disagree

Occupy Posting doesn't refer to 1 specific individual or post the way that Original post or Original Poster does now Dontknow

At least now, OP points to a specific post. Whether its the author or the post itself, it still pints to 1 place.

Suck it up Mary. It isn't that confusing the way it is.

Don't ever put "1" and "pint" in the same sentence. There is no limit in my opinion. Mad
