Are Smartphones really worth $1200 per year to use???

ON TOP of the phone itself ? I don't think so.

What is it? Social status? My friend has one so I NEED one?

I'll take my dumb phone and laptop any day.

A summary from last time:

Quote from Maleficent :
I think you're just so intent on going against the grain (even though it's illogical, cumbersome, less convenient, and provides no actual benefit to you) so you can delude yourself into feeling "unique" and "special."

In fact, you're so hellbent on going against anything with any sort of mass popularity so you can be "different" that you actually make yourself believe that the crap you have is somehow "better."

And the funniest part about that is that it makes you so angry, you have to lash out at anyone that uses the devices that you hate so much. Which in turn makes you look like a complete idiot to everyone else because of your gigantic delusions, and then you become a social pariah.

Well... bravo, buddy. You certainly set yourself apart from the crowd. Thumbup

Just like I would probably never pay for the NFL Season Pass on my cable.

Everyone justifies their own costs in different ways. That's the point she's making.

Again... you're not looking at it from anyone else's perspective. laugh out loud

So in regards to TV, why should I take YOUR point of view into any consideration? Why don't I just make a few threads and a couple hundreds of posts about how people that PAY for TV are sheep, lemmings, stupid, blah, blah, blah.

Do you get the picture yet?

How am I being stubborn again?

Just because I find paying for cell phone data a waste. Multiply it by a family of four and there you have that $1200 just for DATA that most everyone already pays for through Internet access.

I think I'd feel weird having to pay under contract for something I already get free.

It's not worth it for me, especially since it would cost me $1200/yr just for me and my wife. However, I couldn't care less what either people do with their money. I am sure most people here wouldn't spend $300 on a 3-person backpacking tent or $55 on a bag of dog food - but I do. To each his/her own.

I can get water for free, but I choose not to go to the River with buckets every day and I choose to pay the water company a quarterly fee for them to bring the water to my house.

I could save $500 a year if I did it myself, and that is only for a family of two!

Again bad analogy...

See Data you pretty much have to pay for....unless you are at Starbucks or pilfering off your neighbor.

I already pay for it... why would I pay again just to have 4g whatever? Just to have a status huge phone.

Do you actually pay 1200/yr just for the smartphone part (aka data fees)

for example, if I had a flip phone my rate would be the same ... but because I have an android I pay an extra $30/mo data fee. So my "smartphone cost" is 30x12=360/yr (NOT my monthly phone bill x12)

... it is worth the extra to get all of my emails on the go ... esp work. I was going to drop it and go back to a reg. phone and my wife (electronically challenged person) actually said "it's kind of nice to have at least one person be able to look something up when we need it". laugh out loud
No of course not.

No, you are a bad analogy.

All about Convenience.

I have access to water...I pay for someone to run pipes into my house so I don't have to go to the river. It is all the same water, but $125 every 3 months is worth it for at home access. Same reason water costs me $1.00 a bottle at the store...if I want access to the river water WHERE EVER I am...I have to pay a premium.

I do not have to pay for the internet...that is free all over the place...I am paying someone for access to it. I pay $30 for simple access from my house...I choose to pay another $20 for access from ANYWHERE I WANT.

You don't want to access it anywhere...I do...I have to pay a premium for that, and I do.

So has anybody actually answered the original question? I see a ton of responses that indicate that nobody actually has to pay $1200/year to use their smart phone, but the question was whether smart phones are worth $1200/year to use.

So, if the actual price for a data plan for your phone was $1200/year would it be worth it to you?
The answer to OP's question HAS been answered....repeatedly....but he refuses to acknowledge anyone's opinion or POV other than his own. It varies based on what YOU want and are willing to pay....so only you can decide for yourself if paying for data with a smartphone is worth it or not. Your decision likely won't be the same as mine but then I rate the value differently.

A excellent example of how I find value in having a smartphone and paying for data at a fraction of what OP claimed in his original trolling post is doing what retailers call 'scan & scram.' IOW when shopping I will use an app on my phone to scan the barcode on a product I am interested in buying, and compare that store's price with other store prices (the app does all this) in my area plus interweb retailer prices like Amazon. Almost always I can find a much better deal for the product on the interweb just from the app. It also lets me look for the product on SD or on um....'another' deal site so if the product is a hot deal somewhere I can get in on it before it sells out. Has this saved me money? Hell yes! On several deals I have saved as much or more than my phone's cost WITH data for that entire month so OP's trolling is just that....ignorance and trolling since he never allowed for the scenario I just described. It blows his claim out of the water and proves that a smartphone may or can in fact save you money....sometimes enough money to more than pay for itself completely in a given month.

A cost you choose not to pay....so what's your problem then? You don't like it so you don't pay for it...ergo it doesn't affect you. I bet you're one of those busybodies that loves to gossip and insert yourself into their business. Get a life! Everything isn't all about you. That's gotta be a helluva shock to someone like yourself so again, get a life.

I've got a barcode scanner app, but it doesn't seem this handy. What's the name of this app you are talking about?
And is it on Android or iOS?
