RETIRED Marlboro Outwit the West Funny Farm

228 92 October 16, 2010 at 01:35 PM
Hi all,

I started this thread for anyone who wants to come here for lite discussion, jokes, and just general discussion and fun.

Everyone is welcome!

I was thinking that maybe it would be helpful to keep the original thread to a bit more of a serious discussion of the clues and answers.

This would make the original thread more useful to those seeking serious information and clues without having to read through hundreds of extraneous messages.

So, I hope it catches on !

So pop a beer and pull up a chair and relax !

Tomorrow is the big day. Time to dust off your eclipse glasses, binoculars and posterboard, or pinhole camera and witness the transit of Venus, a once in a lifetime event!

I finally have a new computer and I finally have it set up. EEK!What a nightmare.EEK!

I thought I was doing fine on my old one until I saw a funny icon on the bottom right of my taskbar. I clicked on it and was told I was down to almost no memory. Checked the hard drive properties and sure enough, I had like 84 MB free. So I started dumping everything I could onto disks. But I don't store that much on the hard drive anyway, so didn't get much memory back. I'd clear my recycle bin, clear my temp files, clean my hard drive and do that three or four times a day.

I used to have nine tabs open at a time while doing contests and just run through them then open new ones in the same tabs and start again. I was down to using one tab at a time because anything more would just freeze. It took me hours and hours every day to complete the list, but I didn't dare stop because I'd keep getting a gift card here or a cooler there or something else nearly every day. But it was insanity. I just had to hang on until the Memorial Day sales started and it was worth it. I saved $345 off the total cost (and trust me, I'd been tracking the price for weeks, so I really did save that amount). Thankfully I only needed the tower. My monitor and speakers are fine so I didn't have to fork out extra for those.

I had to buy Windows 2010 because I couldn't transfer my old VISTA program to the new machine. I don't have a problem with that program because it's what we use at the Center. I got the professional version so I didn't have to buy Outlook separately. I also got 8 GB of memory and a 1 T hard drive. I figure that should last me a while.

I did 99% of my emails at the Center and did as many new one-entry contests as I could there but on days I was busy, I'd come home to three new pages of possibles I'd have to go through and I was totally freaking out because everything I did would eat away at what little disk space I had left.

It was bad. "How bad was it?" I hear you asking. It was so bad, I actually deleted the sleep/hibernate option so I could pick up a few more GBs of space to keep on going.

I didn't go on facebook or on this site, I didn't search the web for anything (except at "work"), I used the old machine strictly for contests/sweeps/freebies. And it was exhausting because everything took so long to do.

Being on my new machine is like being back in the real world again. But I have to admit, I hate setting up a new computer. All the details, all the stuff to figure out. But it's just about the way I want it (although I'm stuck with Explorer 9 which I HATEMad) so I'm comfortable. No more getting my tummy in a twist just thinking about zombie hard drive eaters nibbling away at my space.

I hope everyone has been well and winning and no, I'm not going to read the 1,738 pages I missed. I'm starting now. Fresh. With my new machine. woot

Sounds like it will really take some of the stress off of you.....I don't know much about computers, but can't you load Chrome so you don't have to mess with IE

I could, but I like IE, it's just that 9 makes extra work for me. I'll get accustomed to it eventually and then 10 will be out. Never fails.

there can be only one (sounds like the line from a movie)

dump it right away before it's entrenched so you can have norton on a clean machine
the longer you wait the more that can interfere
