RETIRED Marlboro Outwit the West Funny Farm

228 92 October 16, 2010 at 01:35 PM
Hi all,

I started this thread for anyone who wants to come here for lite discussion, jokes, and just general discussion and fun.

Everyone is welcome!

I was thinking that maybe it would be helpful to keep the original thread to a bit more of a serious discussion of the clues and answers.

This would make the original thread more useful to those seeking serious information and clues without having to read through hundreds of extraneous messages.

So, I hope it catches on !

So pop a beer and pull up a chair and relax !

EEK! I just saw a 2 T for $99!!!! Used to have the very first HP packard suitcase computer!!! Guy I was renting land from came in and burned down my trailer cause I woouldnt move so he could build a strip club! Only game it played was like pong-ish! Little square you could make go left to right and pretend you were controlling it!!! laugh out loud Was supposed to be portable but had to be plugged in and was very heavy...... not exactly lap friendly!!! laugh out loud
First time I ever got online scared me to death!!!! As soon as I got online I heard a voice say "you got mail". Thought it was a real person and I froze!! Didnt know what to say!!! I turned it off and unplugged it cause I thought it would charge me for getting on by the minute!!!!
I arrived at work one Monday and saw this "thing" on my desk with no book or anything. It was a computer. My boss said his friend gave it to him over the weekend and "please" see what I could do with it and figure it out. I sat there the whole day and never figured out much of anything. At that time all I knew were typewriters. So frustrating. I left there that day shaking. Thought my job was jeopardized and wondered why I could do nothing. Had no clue how computers thought or worked and really never even saw one. He apologized the next day but then we got a "real" computer system and he sent me to school. I loved it. I think that monster he put on my desk was an apple. I did get it to print something that day but that was it.

Welcome back!

I remember back in the day when only us nerds and engineers had computers in their HOME for god's sake, I think I spent over a grand on a hard drive... hmmm... think it might have been 5 or 10 MB! laugh out loud
My first computer had a hard drive. I think. I doubt they ever told me the size. I doubt I would have been interested anyway. I mean who knew you could run out of space? I've never had that happen before. I truly think it's because of all the contest entering. But will that stop me? Not likely. I'm having too much fun and getting too many goodies.

Plus, my sister would kill me if I stopped. She's having even more fun than I am.

I never tell her when I win something under her name. It just shows up in her mailbox as a total surprise and she gets so excited. I also don't tell her what I won. I just pile it up in the back room (I used to put it on the dining room table, but that was getting too dangerous -- I was afraid a pile would topple and bury a cat).

I do send her the movie tickets I get because those are electronic and she can just print them from her computer.

She's coming in again at the end of the month and I have SUCH a stack of stuff to give her. None of it's worth a lot, but there's truly a lot of things for her and for her to distribute to the rest of the family.

I think you may be the one and only who won on that. Great - congrats
I'm not even sure how I found the link. I think they sent an email that I actually read. The link wasn't in my favorites. Kinda freaked me out when I won. Such a rarity lately.

You do know you can clean the space out and recover it??? Sometimes its just malware to fill youre space with junk to run it out. That can be removed too. All else fails reformat!!! Thats my motto!!!! Son says I do it too much but I learned how to reformat before I learned to remove viruses!!! LMAO Havent had to reformat since I put UBUNTU on instead of Windows

I did go through and dump things -- old unused programs, stuff I didn't even know was being saved. But if I'd reformatted, I wouldn't have had a processing system and Windows was like half the cost of the new computer.

The machine was almost 5 years old and I really did run it into the ground. I could have just gotten a new hard drive, but again, I'd have had to buy Windows. I was easier -- and safer -- to just get a new machine.

I had a new hard drive put in my old Gateway and it never ever worked right. Should have saved that money back then and bought a new one. You did good.

5 years old is ancient in computer times!! Was time to get a new one! My son used to repaire computers for people and he gave me all his recovery disks for operating systems from windows 85 to Vista. Just got rid of every thing except XP and Vista just in case I need them but I wont do the others anymore. If the system is that old its time to buy a new one. I want to wait a couple of years and baby this along til the new technology thats coming out this fall isnt new anymore and the prices fall some. Instead of silicon its going to crystal and will be up to 500 times faster and hold so much more info and be very small tower. Great changes coming. Will have to learn all over again but thats progress! Out of everything my 98 year old grandma saw in her life, she said the greatest invention was the washer and dryer!!!! Saved days on work for her and she got to use the old wringer washer to dehull black walnuts!!!

OK Folks. Time for me to check in. We celebrated our 35th anniversary this weekend. Went out to eat Friday night but our anniversary was Saturday. The first half of the evening was fun and I got to wear that black dress I bought last year for a special occasion. But after the second half of the evening, I had no idea how I could have been married to that man for 35 years. Oh well, I got over it.

Saturday night we went to a friend's retirement party (37 years with postal service). He and wife are Irish and big-time partyers. They hired an Irish musician, who plays at the Milwaukee Irish fest, to entertain us. It was a grand time and more fun than going out to eat the previous night.

Actually won something on Monday ($25 GC) from a sweep I entered for the first time (ends June 9). Felt great.

Always happy seeing the rest of you win.
Congrats on win, still working on that one, and Happy Anniversary
