SD.net Texas Hold'm Tournament Thread (2007 Q2 Champ: TRIPP!) - This poker event brought to you in part by sandwiches, cold beer, and OTs

Summary from last event of Q2 2007 Tournament:

Week 13 (by Vec): Instead of going with Tripp's suggested write-up of "all he has to say is he was on fire and bent us all over", I have decided to tell you exactly what happened. For some reason the planets were aligned over the vec household and the poker gods were watching over me. I managed to get pocket pair after pocket pair all night with the occasional AK and AQ in-between. The money positions saw myself in a commanding lead at first with GiantPeach and Rammy right behind me. After Rammy manged to knock me down a few pegs and build his stack to put us a hell of a lot closer in chips then I would have cared to have been, he got dealt AK (suited) to my AQ (off) and he pushed all of his chips into the pot pre-flop from the big blind after GP & I limped in. With the way the cards were falling for me all night (and the fact that it was hella late) I decided to play along and call. Well, the planets and poker gods were still around because I pulled broadway (straight on the flop) to put me heads up with GiantPeach. Here was the tough one. GP had decided to now play in such an aggressive way that I was really caught off guard and was afraid to even limp in on my small blind. I gave the warning to "be careful" with all of those all-ins but the warning was ignored and GP's pocket 4's went up against my pocket 9's for the last hand before the break. No bad beats that hand and that left GP with about 1500 chips to play with after the break and the rest was history, I made my only money position of the quarter while locking Tripp into the top spot with my play. Congrats Tripp, but beware - vec is back baby!

Results from previous weeks:
Week #12: (by Iconian) Ok, well, i have to admit, this was by far my easiest win. I was hitting left and right. Led in chips most of the game. But i did see a few interesting plays. One was how shuriken pushed with flush off flop and xzempt called with zilch!. Then there were few other bad beats, primarily when rg aq's beat xzempt's kq when flop was kq... (rivered ace). Top 4 were me and 3 girls(yahtze!!!). Rg went out 4th again on a BRUTAL hand. BB and her raised preflop and flop came with 8 xx, RG pushed with set of 8's and BB called with KK. BAM! runner/runner flush and RG is out Frown. Final 3 wasn't very exciting, Goat slowplayed her KK versus my lower pockets and took 1/2 of my stack, but because the table was relaxed, I was able to double up off BB and slowly knocked Goat out and then finished off BB with few good flops.

Week 11 (by S50): Once I won a race against Rammy when he pushed with AQ and I called with 10s, it was easy to make it to the final table. Here I'll start with the top 5 (that is when I started this write-up and when I started paying attention). Bbrunick and I were in the lead from about the top 7 to the end. At the top five it was me, Mav, bbrunick, Shur1k3n, and Arj. Arj and Shur1k3n were hanging on with small stacks for quite a while. I can't believe they stayed in as long as they did. Eventually Mav and Shur1k3n and it was down to 3; me, bbrunick, and Arj. Arj must have had an itchy trigger finger because he went out in the first hand, after it came down to 3. In all fairness Arj didn't have a big chip stack; he had about 3K to my 12K and bbrunick's 13K. That took us to heads up. It was bbrunick and myself; I had about 16K and bbrunick had about 13K. It went back and forth (with bbrunick showing more aggression than me) but once I took the lead it was all downhill from there. I won about 4 hands after I took at 4K chip lead. Bbrunick paired the middle card on the flop (it held on to be the second to highest card on the board) but I flopped top pair. From that point on bbrunick seemed to run out of steam and heart because he just pushed in with nothing each hand.

Week 10: (summary by Iconian) This was i think the longest game we had so far, over 300 total hands, and 3 hrs of play. To be honest, first few hrs were a blur, i was too busy doing some crap in the backround so i only remember things when i got to the final table (rest doesn't matter anyway!). Few notable things happened: LD had a massive amount of chips as usual and they fluxuated up and down every hand. He took a nice chunk from vec with 87 on BB, after vec raised nicely preflop (i think he had ak and ld hit 2nd pair on river). Few other good things came out, RG really bet nicely on me and took a good chunk of my chips and i dropped to about 2k, but the table was relaxed so i was able to climb back to 4k. Rg was playing awesome and lead the tourney for while with 2x the chips of others, but chipping, mostly done by dean who went in with any 2 cards against her every hand, forced her push on me with 9's, i got lucky with AA's. Hand of the match came in final 3, when dean had some crap and went all in a few times, as he went all in with 77 and i decided to call with a3 (i wonder wtf i was smoking??, as soon as i saw 77 i saw GG (preflop)); flop came to a3a, and dean was history. Final 2, was pretty boring with us each raising on each other and after the blinds hit 1k/2k i caught some pairs off flop and made tripp push with mediocre hand againts 99. Peace!

Week #9: (summary by RLeach2) I think this week started out pretty tight. Only 1 person out before the hand of the night fell. RG and adshover were all in preflop. RG holding AA and adshover holding KK. The very nasty flop came KK8. After that I don't remember losing many until about 5 minutes before the break. I think we lost about 5 or 6 within 5 minutes. The final table really tightened up. Tripp ended up on the oh so lovely bubble, and Iconians was just too shortstacked when we got down to 3. Janeey and I played heads up for about 45 minutes, with neither one of us wanting to give up too many chips. The big hand came when she raised with 22 and I called with J4 suited(hey it was heads up any 2 cards can be good). The flop came 448 and we ended up all in. That gave me a huge chip lead and then my AQ held up against her A8 and I finally got my first win. See you all next week.....

Week #8: (writeup by Iconian) This week's tournament reminded me the previous quarter with tighter players being in the running. When Adshover and Luckydawg were eliminated, there was a collective sigh of relief at the table and no expectations of seeing Aces cracked by 57o. Tourney went on it's course, until RandomGirl went down on me like there was no tomorow at which point all hell broke loose. The tournament climaxed with a flurry of bad beats; notably runner, runner suckout for our winner (who was all-in at the time). I said (as a joke) in the beginning when Rl007 got 2x lead in chips over everyone else, that it's just like adding oil into the fire (when he loses, he blames ps for his bad beats). In the end, with decent cards, few good bets shuriken ended up in the 3rd with rl007 going up againts shly. The final hand was typical PS; rl007 drew straight on flop, slowplayed it, not realising that schly flopped 2 pair which turned into FH, which sent rl007 into the abyss!

Week 7: (writeup by Ludadawg) What a great night for poker, seems like everyone playing tonight had some sort of alcoholic beverage in front of them. I started off hot and was chip leader for majority of the first 2 levels. As fellow SDers started to get knocked off one by one, I felt like I actually had a chance. After Tripp had an epic suckout against Rammy, I knew the game was mine. The most crucial hand of the night was my suckout on Icon when an Ace fell on the river to save me and sent Icon to the rail. The Final 3 at the table were myself, Tripp and last but not least, Randomgirl weeeeeeeeee. My A-10 held up against RG's Q-9 and she finished in 3rd. Heads-up was a classic battle between myself and Tripp as the chip lead swung back and forth numerous times. I was able to catch a few cards in the end and walk away with the victory. Great game everyone and see you all on the felt next week!

Week 6: (writeup by LuckyDog/Stealth) From my perspective, things went like this. I got lucky, I started to get unlucky, drank some beer, got lucky again, sucked out on the river on a bad call or two, and then got lucky some more! Adshover (S50) played an awesome game. I absolutely hated sitting to his right the entire time. I think it made me play a better game. I finally thought I had him when he bet his pocket deuces against my open-ended straight and flush draw and I hit the straight flush (my favorite hand!) But even being severely short-stacked, he battled back and became a serious contender once again. There were 6 of us for a looooong time, nobody wanted to go out! Chessmany3k was the big chip leader when it was down to 3 of us, but S50 and I managed to take the lead. Wookie and Mav were up there witnessing all the river carnage, and Janeey was kind of quiet tonite, but still placed 6th.

Week 5: (report by Janeey) It was girls night tonight as women all the women brought sandwiches then took 2 of the top 3 places. The final 3 were myself, yotafan, and goatroper. Yotafan took out goatroper, and we went heads up fairly even. I wore him down to win my first SD tourney.

Week 4: (Report from S50 w/ thanks to Stealth) I was up and down in chips a couple of times. At one time, I was in last place in chips at the final table ( there's always hope!) A couple of big hands and a bad beat or two, for the other person, and I was right back in it again and once I knocked out Rammy, all the serious competition was gone. I went into the final table in second place but of course I gave most of my chips to bbrunick; he always seemed to be there, threatening in the shadows. For a while it was very close in chips with 4 or 5 of us but something happened and then something else happened and it got down to three. Then I flopped trips against AA and it went to head up; with bbrunick (who I tended to give my chips to). I had about a 3:1 lead most of the time and eventually won it.

Week 3:: I was up and down in chips a couple of times. At one time, I was in last place in chips, like 19th or something. (So there's always hope!) A couple of big hands with bad beats for the other person and I was right back in it again. I went into the final table as the chip leader. But of course I gave most of my chips to BigJohn, who always seemed to be there, threatening in the shadows. Mav was playing really well and was who I expected would win it all. His chips didn't fluctuate like mine. I was glad to see GoatRoper there, just so we weren't having a big sausage-fest. Wookie was sort of a silent killer lurking there, not really making himself noticed, but definitely a force to be reckoned with. Everyone did a great job, and the card Gods shone down on my tonite. Yay! (Report from Stealth)

OP note: I believe we're calling for Caveney's mancard after he put a $5 bounty on his own head then failed to show. Ranting The only way to retain it would be to double the offer next week!

Week #2: Congrats to Yotafan for winning it. This week was pretty exciting. After an hour of fairly easygoing play, in the next 15 minutes 8 people went out, courtesy of 1-2 other individuals who build massive stacks (watching yotafan rise from 4k to 8.5k in 4 hands was surreal, yet impressive ). In the end, Shly got 3rd place when he went all in with Ace/6 versus Daddyrpm's AK and Daddyrpm tried to work some kinda deal with Yotafan, who suckered Daddyrpm all in (both had about same chips) after flopping 2 pair after calling my raise with 46off(summary by Iconian)

Week #1: Great showing for the first week of the second quarter with 19 players! trippwwf, Shill Player (Schly, Me), and Random Girl made the final three with some slightly risky play and it got crazier from there. Random Girl took a chunk out of my fat stack with me trying a little bluff and chase that failed miserably. Only to be ultimately taken out by me in third with me chasing an A high flush draw to her all in gambit with top pair of Kings (The flush's gotta hit sometime, right? ).

Tripp stayed fairly even through the three up play and ended up Heads up against my 20K plus stack. It was tough going for him and he fought well but couldn't overcome the blinds and my stack. (summary by Schly)

Week #13 - final event of 2007 Q1 Tournament: Exciting finale as the two top point owners battled it out going head-to-head, winner take all. Iconian prevailed with his KQo vs Rammy's A9s preflop Ranting Mavtech finished 3rd and poor wittle Ms. CCJ finished wanting more on the bubble. Congratulations to Iconian who won the last two weeks to win the points title for Q1! Applause

How Points are Awarded:

This spreadsheet uses the PokerStars TLB ranking formula. I've modified it to give points to every player that plays each week, not just the top 15%. That rewards participation more than average finish. It therefore encourages folks to show up every week and have a good time.

The formula used to determine the total points awarded to a player for any given tournament is:

Points = 10 * [sqrt(n)/sqrt(k)] * [1+log(b+0.25)]

Where:
n is the number of entrants
k is the place of finish (k=1 for the first-place finisher, and so on)
b is the buy-in amount in dollars (excluding PS administrative fee).

Week 1 (by RL007): This week didn't start out very well for me. I was down to 400 chips very early. We had a lot of pair over pair fights tonight. I know of 88 vs 99, QQ vs KK, and KK vs AA(this would be the one where I knocked out iconians). The final table was REALLY tight until the blinds got to 200/400. After that people dropped quick until the final 4 where Jinzo and Wuzzy were fighting it out to get in the money. Finally Wuzzy just got too low and adshover and I called his all in and I believe my monster that was K6 ended up taking him out. Jinzo didn't stand much of a chance with the stacks that adshover and I had so she was dispensed with rather quickly. Adshover and I ended up all in with me holding A9c and he had A8os. I believe the board came 22A34 so my 9 kicker played and ads was down to the felt. A9 a couple of hands later and it was over. What a way to start the new quarter!

Man when I first got aces cracked and had 90 chips to come back to over 2000 I though It was going to be my night. Then the same person takes me out with K8 to my kk's OMG he was just way to lucky, but he was suited so I guess it is ok. (lol) my dream of biggest come back ever went down the drain. CRAZIEST FINAL TABLE I HAD EVER SEEN.

Lol2 I didn't realize the same person cracked your Aces and topped your Ks.

You did see when my Qs got beat by CCJ's 10s that it was a one outer. Someone else claimed to have a 10 so there was only 1 card in the deck that could beat me ...
