How do I get pale again?

10,633 2,427 June 9, 2012 at 01:07 PM in Sad
Ok, so summer has started and I have been playing lots more tennis, I mean lots, avg. 10+ hours a week, and even using sunblock I have went up a good 5 shades, I am Chinese suppose to be lighter/light skin, yellow if you wanna say, now I look dark as some of the Hispanic people out there. Anything I can do? My parents get md at me for this b/c they say girls won't like me as I am so dark and stuff, and they always tell me to not play tennis although I do anyway. Anyway, any advice how to reverse this?

Wow, really? I've never heard of anything like that. Is this regional? On Jerry Springer? Where do you see/hear this kind of thing? EEK!
Ok, I looked it up. Don't judge me. The show was "I Used to Be Fat" and it was on MTV. The stories were really cool, though, in that the kids got personal trainers and lost a ton of weight in a healthy way.

Though it is disrespectful to say a culture is one-hundred years behind another just bc it's different. Different is just different. Don't say we're behind. Bc that makes it sound like our culture is inferior.
I didn't mean inferior, I just meant timeline-wise, because quite a while ago, people here and elsewhere valued paleness for the same reason - it meant you were wealthier and didn't have to work out in the hot sun all day, which was a more desirable quality obviously.

Yeah... I take "reality" TV with a grain of salt. Very little of it on there is actually real, and they often invent background stories like that for the shock value.

Again, not saying it doesn't happen, I just don't see any evidence of it being very prevalent.

Yeah, I'm with you. And I was a little let down to see that I had, in fact, watched a show on MTV.

It could have something to do with your medication. Many acne medications can cause photosensitivity.

Yea, my parents are a bit weird on some things like this issue. But I will admit, I think I am pretty tan from the norm. of my usual summers, so I was looking for a solution, and yes, I thought I should be more pale/yellow, whatever you wanna call the Chinese race in terms of color. Not white... But seriously, my parents are pretty mixed in socialism, we follow beliefs of Chinese and we adapt to American social "norms", so I cannot blame them for wanting certain things from me. I think the whole point of having parents is to have them guide you when you make certain mistakes big or small, you are more similar to them, or some parental figure, than you lead on no matter how much you deny it.
I agree that the role of our parents is to mentor us. The most important thing is to understanding their reasoning. If you simply believe what you are told, without some measure of reflection, then your beliefs are shallow and without validity. They are someone else's ideals. If you believe as they do on this issue, then take steps to avoid tanning. If it's not a big deal to you, then explain this to them. Either way, own it.

Oh, and BTW? I am a "white girl" that tans unbelievably dark every summer. I wear mondo sunblock everyday and I still tan. Took me lots of convincing to get out of Mexico even with a ton of ID. As a child I was ridiculed for it and as a teen and beyond, I was vilified for it. I quit listening to people either way.

well said. it has nothing to do with race, just perception. i think the best is comparing people who want to get a tan. we don't see anything wrong with that. but in some cultures being light skinned is just as valued.
Arjie, I miss you in the lounge. hug

Maybe huh, but that was just for my face, and I haven't used it much since the prescription. I only use it a couple times a month now, and I only followed the guidelines for exactly on month when it was prescribed. After that I use the treatment once a week or so, now sometimes one time every week and a half to two weeks. It has been about 3 months since I kinda quit and use it periodically now. I never looked at it that way, but can this be the cause? I wouldn't expect its effects to spread to my whole body, and I only used it at night. Never went outside with it on.

Although on an update, I still get an occasional pimple, but my face is cleared up now. So that is definitely one less problem.

Thanks for the advice, and it definitely has not stopped me from playing tennis or any other type of physical activity.

I'll ask them when I go get my TB test. I need one anyway for when I go to Internship at the hospital or something.
