They're not branded with Marlboro's logo or anything like that; just plain black. They're cheap plastic and made in China, but actually pretty nice for the fact that they're free; i.e. they're better quality than what the kids would purchase for this style nowadays, I think (unless you're going for Ray Bans or something). They look exactly like these:

http://www.tkanton.com/uploads/3/...2_orig.jpg

They even have those little metal pieces on either side on the front (like the ones in the photo). They come in a nice drawstring, cloth case and the sticker on the front says UV 400 (ultraviolet protection).

Since they're very in-style right now, I think these are great. If they break, it's no big deal, and you can use the drawstring case for something else! Big Grin

Marlboro advertised they were awarding "Wayfarer" sunglasses. Wayfarrer is a trademark (registered) by Bausch and Lomb and assigned to Ray-Ban a company once owned by B&L.

Real Wayfarer sunglasses cost an average of $150. These are supposed to have a retail value of $15. In the distant past Marlboro gave away REAL Wayfarer';s

I called the Consumer Affairs Dept for Altera/Phillip Morris. (1-800-494-2444) and complained about the cheap knock-offs. I suggested next they would be awarding us a Genuine Rolex made in China. They got the drift and apologized and said to make up for the confusion they would send me a memory stick and a hamburger speaker. Marlboro should not have used the Wayfarer name, even if they only thought it was a descriptive term, in their advertising. They are not a small "mickey-Mouse" company.

The PROBLEM is that Marlboro (or some overly energetic Executive Assistant) described the sunglasses as Wayfarer sunglasses. They have NOT shipped Wayfarer sunglasses. Marlboro is a big and complicated company and they well know what they did was illegal, not just un-ethical. It does not matter if they relied upon the Chinese manufacturer for the description, Marlboro is also on the proverbial hook. It would be no different then if they had advertised "Windows 7 CD" and shipped a fake Chinese Copy rather than a copy authorized by Microsoft. Luxottica Group (from Italy) now owns both Ray-Ban AND Wayfarer as trademarks. http://www.ray-ban.com/usa/sunglasses?cat=19 Marlboro knows this and that is why they were so quick to offer me a compensatory prize.

Sounds like you are making it a bit blown out of proportions. You stated that you already knew the glasses are retailed @ $15... Yet here we have this rant.

Be happy to have got something, and then be happy for getting rewarded again for nit picking a phrase.

I may be wrong but wayferer is considered a style or shape. Kind of like Ray Ban aviators are a style while another company was credited with selling the first pair years ago. A lot of companies now openly sell them as wayferer style especially that they made a comeback. Now if marlboro said ray ban wayferers it would be different but they openly stated the value at 15 bucks so its obvious they weren't ray bans. My point is you can use wayferers just like aviators without a capital letter.

You are correct, "wayfarers" is a style/shape of sunglasses (I happened upon this thread in a search for deals on wayfarers).

Other brands besides Ray Ban make wayfarer styles, such as Burberry, Versace, Prada. Here are a bunch of different brands from Saks - link here. [saksfifthavenue.com]

You guys are so very wrong. I am pleased none of you are working for me protecting any trademarks I may own.

I have said over and over again that Wayfarrer is a TRADEMARKED neme when used in conjunction with sunglasses and eye wear.

So, since few of you seem to believe me, here is the actual legal filing and finding on the Wayfarer trademark.. This means that anyone other than the owner of the trademark may not use the trademark unless they have some form of licensing agreement. I assure you that the cheap Chinese glasses provided by Marlboro are not licensed nor are they Wayfarers.

Folks it is easy to find cheap copies out there, but that does not make it right to purchase them nor to own them, and it is un-forgivable that a large company like Marlboro, who protect their copyrights vigorously, would give away a product infringing upon another's copyright.
