You threw away what?!

237 50 June 21, 2012 at 05:05 PM in Finance
I decided to put my log book on this forum so you can all see the crazy amount of free stuff in good condition that I find while walking my dogs at night in NYC. My girlfriend and I recently moved into a new apartment on the Upper East Side and we had been noticing how much brand new (or antique) stuff is left out on the curb.

So for fun (and because we are both as cheap as they come), we started grabbing stuff that is in good condition. Either we use it, try to sell it, or give it away.

Oh, and keep in mind, bottles and cans have a $0.05 deposit on them so we return those.

We just started keeping track, here is what we have so far:

6/18 - 18 books, 1 milk crate, 4 deposit cans ($0.20)
6/19 - Aero-Swiss Humidifier (Valued over $100), Keurig Coffee Machine ($120), Small Dust Buster, Best Fitness Leg Developer (Over $100), 11 deposit cans ($0.55)
6/20 - 7 deposit cans ($0.35)
6/21 - 37 bottle deposit cans (took the dogs on a long walk this afternoon) ($1.85)

That's the last four days, I'll update this as we get new finds.

Anyone else do this either out of necessity or as a hobby?

Stephen

laugh out loud That's great

I suppose you are going to abandon us here in the Lounge now though Sadwalk

*edit* My cat decided to add a title to my post.

His name is Zeus so I'm wondering if the "zs" at the end is supposed to be his signature.

Sometimes I don't know about that cat.

Put a new post up!

Buuut... here is the text and picture of it cause I love you folks!

It was a crazy night. Garbage night is a bit overwhelming -- we were actually leaving good stuff behind. To paint a picture, Chelsea and I were walking our three big dogs and carried all of this stuff back. We are going to have to start donating or selling, because we are certainly not hoarders (I'm actually a total neat-freak) and the amount of stuff we have is freaking both of us out. We had a run-in with some local "competition" -- a young man from Guatamala. He was carryng two big bags full of cans and bottles and came up on us while we were sorting through a pile. As a peace offering, I offered him some of our bottles in exchange for any Coca-Cola product caps for our My Coke Rewards account. We did an exchange and went our separate ways.

Here is our list:
38 Bottle Deposits ($1.85)
2 Wilson Titanium Tennis Rackets
1 Large Kitchen Garbage can (we have really needed one of these and almost bought one the other day!)
A set of Arts and Crafts drawers for Michael's. We actually bought one of these for my cousin a couple months ago when it was on sale (with an additional coupon of course) but right now they are retailing for $59.99
A crochet purse
A Shannon Hand-Crafted Lead Crystal Cake Plate and Server
A Cooks Panini-Maker (Chelsea is already making us a midnight snack!!)
3 Magazines -- Elle, Cosmo, and Glamour
2 Picture frames in their original plastic
6 My Coke Reward Caps
2 My Coke Reward cases (10 pts each)

Wow! Y'all have found some great stuff! I love finding things on the side of the road. I recently found an upper corner cabinet. It worked really well over my desk with some shelves. We have found lots of large planters (the kind you get trees in). They are wonderful for growing tomatoes. We find construction items and I'm always looking for found objects for art pieces.

You are going to have to find an old shopping cart so you can bring more stuff home. Or hitch a wagon to one or more of the dogs.

I didn't realize people dig magazines out of the trash. I throw away close to 30 a month unread, we just remove the address labels. Stupid companies don't know what "remove from mailing list" means!

He could use some of the milk crates, when he finds some wheels and rope, he could have a little wagon.

Thanks! Yeah we posted the workout equipment on Amazon, but need to start on our Craigslist listings. Anything that doesn't sell gets donated to Housing Works (http://www.housingworks.org/) which is a chain of thrift stores here in NYC that the proceeds go to HIV/AIDS research. My great-uncle was one of the first confirmed to die from AIDS, and we've decided that they will be our organization of choice.

You need to find or rig up some sort of wagon. Many large dog breeds enjoy working/tasks, and can benefit you guys by carrying some of the load. They have special harnesses you can get made specifically for dogs pulling things.
