You threw away what?!

237 50 June 21, 2012 at 05:05 PM in Finance
I decided to put my log book on this forum so you can all see the crazy amount of free stuff in good condition that I find while walking my dogs at night in NYC. My girlfriend and I recently moved into a new apartment on the Upper East Side and we had been noticing how much brand new (or antique) stuff is left out on the curb.

So for fun (and because we are both as cheap as they come), we started grabbing stuff that is in good condition. Either we use it, try to sell it, or give it away.

Oh, and keep in mind, bottles and cans have a $0.05 deposit on them so we return those.

We just started keeping track, here is what we have so far:

6/18 - 18 books, 1 milk crate, 4 deposit cans ($0.20)
6/19 - Aero-Swiss Humidifier (Valued over $100), Keurig Coffee Machine ($120), Small Dust Buster, Best Fitness Leg Developer (Over $100), 11 deposit cans ($0.55)
6/20 - 7 deposit cans ($0.35)
6/21 - 37 bottle deposit cans (took the dogs on a long walk this afternoon) ($1.85)

That's the last four days, I'll update this as we get new finds.

Anyone else do this either out of necessity or as a hobby?

Stephen

I can't really tell what's going on inside of it actually. What happens is, I power it up, it takes the water into the heating section, it bring it to a boil, says "Brewing" and then nothing happens (no water at all comes out, not even a trickle), and then like 15-20 seconds later it says "Ready to Brew"
Ours did that and vinegar did the trick. If you don't drink coffee then defs resell that bad boy...even @ $50 it is free $...less repair time of course.

Sure, what do you want? I have hundreds.

Thank you!! It has made a huge difference at night in the bedroom. It helps to circulate the air inside too, the apartment def doesnt seem as stale as it was before.
I can't live without a fan in the bedroom. If the world goes dark I may never sleep again.

I want some coupons!!! Wink I am sick of buying to many papers for just a few of the coupons I want.

That sucks about the racket mix up. Way to mess up the profit margin Frown Sorry I have no idea how to fix it. I only buy on ebay, not much, usually coupons.
Mad I don't have places to get them for free unless I chance upon some in a paper recycle bin. Those get looted for coupons regularly around here but I can at least usually find some paper that I can print on so I don't totally waste my trip.

I don't understand why people pay such outrageous prices for these tiny little apartments. It is ridiculous. As I've said before in this post, I think our place is around 600 sqft and we pay 2125. I wouldn't want to be in a place any smaller than this. I guess if I didn't have 3 big dogs or a girlfriend, and I wasn't a homebody, I could manage with 300 sqft... but given my current lifestyle, I think I'd go crazy if I had to stare at walls all day.

Faint Yikes! I could never live in New York. DH and I pay $395 for a 550 sq ft apartment in Southern Indiana. $2125 is insane for such a small place.

It is insane but it is NYC! I think they have to walk up and down 6 floors of stairs too. That would be nice to keep your ass in shape Wink

Our rent is about that $1225 but our place is huge! A little on the old side but a lot has been remodeled. Plus there is a seperate basement apartment we rent out for $950 which includes all utilities. So our utility bills are insane high since we pay for all of it. We have 4 bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs plus a huge kitchen and two living room type rooms and a central laundry/hall area. Downstairs on our side there is another bathroom, two bedrooms and a big movie room, plus storage area.
On the apartment side of downstairs (which locks off) there is one bathroom, massive kitchen (about the same size as OP apartment lol) livingroom, three small bedrooms (two of which are very small) and a big laundry room which has all the "stuff" to keep the house going in it like two huge water heaters and lots of pipes/vents and stuff.

Speaking of people who threw away stuff...

My boyfriend recently bought a house, and they left some things inside! Now, some of the furniture, they asked if we would want, but the stuff in the attic- I don't think they knew was up there. So now he is set so far as luggage and baby stuff. Looks like he got multiple sets of luggage, a training potty, possibly a crib, and high chair! woot Now, to sell, or hold onto for later Scratchchin I can't believe they just left all this stuff! woot
