People typically do not give engagement gifts. So if you decide not to give, it will not be considered rude. Money is the most common gift. Close friends and family sometimes will give personalized gifts to the couple. Gifts should not be expected at an engagement party. There is not gift table (area), and there is no "opening gifts" portion of the party.
