Oh....sorry. I let one of those pesky indoctrinations slip out again. Shutup

A refined saying that seems to encompass some sort of wisdom through the smallest amount of words possible. "Indoctrination" doesn't work as well as "cliche", but ok. If you're going to keep on the catholic path, you should definitely get used to those.

One thing that has bothered me about Mexicans catholics (IDK it if it's true for other Catholics) is how they perceive the virgin Mary. They worship/pray to her as if she's God.

The catholics I know aren't like that, but they do hold Mary very high. It was just recently that I learned why. One reason is, we are told to honor our mother and our father. Well if Christ is at the pinnacle of christianity, shouldn't we also honor his mother. I mean really....she was chosen to be the mother of Jesus. And when I asked the priest why catholics pray to Mary, he asked me if I had ever asked someone to pray for me about something going on in my life. Then he asked me if I ever thought I would be praying when I get to heaven. I said I'd probably be doing more praying there than here. Then he explained that catholics don't pray to Mary; they ask Mary to pray to her son for them.

So it's more like, "Hey, Mary. Will ask your son to do this or that or look after this or that for me since you're in all good with him being his mother and all? wink wink nudge nudge." So then it all made sense to me since all of those are biblical principles. Honor your mother and father. We are all brothers and sister through our souls which means Mary is the mother of our brother Jesus. She certainly has his ear as is evidenced by her request to get more wine for the wedding. And Paul and Peter both addressed praying to the souls already in heaven and asking them to intercede on our behalf.

Which is why they call it asking for Mary to intercede for you.
Plus she's the only human who ever ascended to heaven, meaning that she never died and was buried, but rather at the time of her death she was whisked away straight to heaven. That's why a lot of people have more of a worship for her.
Or at least, that's what you're supposed to believe.

Personally, I believe she had sex out of wedlock and succeeded in the greatest coverup mankind has ever witnessed. Good job, Mary.

Interesting...never thought about it that way. What's with the whole candle and figurine thing and praying to them?

Nono There was Enoch, Elijah, and Jesus who ascended in to heaven. There's no documented, biblical proof that Mary ascended in to heaven.

The same as all of the other symbolism. They surround themselves with it to be immersed in it with the hopes of constantly remembering to pray, live a Christian life, be a servant, and all of that other stuff. It's just a constant reminder of how they are suppose to live their lives, and if one of their big things is always asking Mary to intercede on their behalf, then they'll have a lot of candles and statues of Mary around to remind them.

There are only two things I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures... and the Dutch.

Uhhhh, there's no documented proof that anyone ascended into heaven, and the bible isn't proof of anything. However, in the context of your own new-found religion:

Jesus doesn't count, and those other two are old testament, which means that the Jews believed that, but it's not taught as canonical in the catholic religion. Don't forget, the old testament is seen as nice history, not law. If it was, then you wouldn't be mixing fabrtics in your clothes, touching women on their period, etc. As a catholic, you absolutely believe that Mary ascended into heaven.
