did you get any? drool
.
I probably could have gotten some.. This was the chick that at about 2 am got a text from some other dude at another bar, and wanted to say .. I was bombed, so whatever. Then we get there, she starts talking to him for like 15 minutes straight, so I got up and asked the other dude if he could drive her home, and left.. The look on her face was worth not getting laid laugh out loud
I mean, I'm not super jealous, but that just got too annoying. I was tired anyhow.. And this chick did have a serious drinking problem.. She had a little boy at home and would party like this 4 days a week, while the kid was at home with dad or a sitter.. That doesn't seem to be correct priorities.. other red flags too...Overall a fun person to drink with but not really long term material.

Nono There was Enoch, Elijah, and Jesus who ascended in to heaven. There's no documented, biblical proof that Mary ascended in to heaven.

The same as all of the other symbolism. They surround themselves with it to be immersed in it with the hopes of constantly remembering to pray, live a Christian life, be a servant, and all of that other stuff. It's just a constant reminder of how they are suppose to live their lives, and if one of their big things is always asking Mary to intercede on their behalf, then they'll have a lot of candles and statues of Mary around to remind them.
Enoch and Elijah = Metatron and Sandolphon
I pray to Angels and Ascended Masters (ie Jesus) all the time. Praying isn't worshipping.
For example, Archangel Michael is God's great warrior. If I need strength in a situation, I'll pray to Michael Strong

Interesting...never thought about it that way. What's with the whole candle and figurine thing and praying to them?
That I don't know. I only know a lot about what I guess we could call "US catholicism." I'm not sure why other cultures have slightly different takes on things like that, but if I had to guess it has something to do with a holdover from their "previous" culture. Like; we celebrate Christmas when we do because of Celtic culture and the winter solstice. Maybe the Central and South American cultures have something from the Mayan/ Aztec/ etc days that they incorporate.

I have lots of good memories of church and church obligations as a kid. I'm a free thinker and I'm not going to let church doctrine dictate my opinions on politics or social matters, but instilling a spiritual practice (no matter what it ends up being) in a little person is a good thing. Dammmmnnn I had a dream about church last night. I cant remember what about it now Annoyed

Uhhhh, there's no documented proof that anyone ascended into heaven, and the bible isn't proof of anything. However, in the context of your own new-found religion:

Jesus doesn't count, and those other two are old testament, which means that the Jews believed that, but it's not taught as canonical in the catholic religion. Don't forget, the old testament is seen as nice history, not law. If it was, then you wouldn't be mixing fabrtics in your clothes, touching women on their period, etc. As a catholic, you absolutely believe that Mary ascended into heaven.
Read [wikipedia.org]
My faith isn't newly found. I've been a christian since around the age of 6. And I spoke to the priest about some of the stuff that I don't know enough about or don't completely believe. He advised me that I'm not required to believe everything the church believes. It would be a violation of faith to even declare that someone must believe everything the church believes. That's believing in the church and not in God.

But that's what it boils down to is faith. You have your ideas of things and I have mine. What yours are don't make me think any less of you, and I hope the same is true for the way you think of me.

Then he explained that catholics don't pray to Mary; they ask Mary to pray to her son for them.
.
Yep, that's spot on.. Although there are Catholics that get confused about that.
When you look at the words of official prayers, they are often worded like "Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us Sinners".. for example..

I think one reason that custom happened is because it's just easier for humans to relate to Mary or the Saints. I can read about one of the saints and realize they were just a normal person who lead a great life. Even if one does not believe in God, you can look at the lives of the Saints (or someone like Mother Theresea) and appreciate the profound sacrifice they have made for the greater good of humanity.. They are good role models. That's not saying they were perfect, but if everyone in the world acted like them, the world would be a wonderful place.

I didn't say new found faith, I said new found religion.
As to what the priest told you, that's the first time ever I've heard a catholic priest say anything along those lines and it's in direct conflict with what the vatican would have to say on those matters.
Catholicism is extremely strict at its core, and once you start picking and choosing what you believe you are no longer a catholic, you are some sort of hybrid or some separate christian religion all together. It's like saying that you're an atheist but you also believe in some sort of creator. Well then guess what? You're not an atheist, you're an agnostic. I hear catholics profess this type of thing all the time and it's incorrect.

There are certain tenets of catholicism that you just can't pick and choose. That priest might just be like an army recruiter - will tell you whatever you want to hear to bump up the numbers. And believing everything the church teaches isn't believing in the church. There are rules to being a catholic that are set forth by the church. You either follow them or you're not a catholic.

That's just the way it be.

I'm not very knowledgable. It's just stuff I hear or see from Catholics.

My mom told me that in Mexico there's a place people go and that they hit themselves to punish themselves for their sins. Weird

Well I live within a two hour drive of 33 military bases. This is a highly active military area, but things have been ramping up more and more with the weapons, people, and equipment I see getting transported every day. It's pretty scary.

I think what he is saying is that there's no way for someone like myself to know everything the church has declared. That means that there's no way I can agree with something I don't know.

Yeah, self-flagellation is big in some areas. Some people use these wire/ metal type things to whip their own backs. Good times.
