Meeting people from the innerwebz

Has anyone ever met anyone they only know from online? How was it? Awkward? Fun? Unexpected? Interesting?

How would you feel about someone you've only talked to online and on the phone staying with you the first time you met them?

Someone I have been chatting with online/on the phone for 6 years is coming to town and staying with me for 3 days. I feel like I know her well online, but I'm not sure how I feel about her staying with me for 3 days. I'm excited about it, but apprehensive at the same time. It doesn't help that I have a touch of social anxiety to begin with. Then you hear horror stories about people who you thought you knew online being false. Thoughts? Is this unwise? Experiences?

several years back, i was involved in a very active forum that has since become a ghost town. back then, there were enough users that regional/city-wide meets were held regularly and forum-wide meets were done twice in the six years or so i was there. i attended one of the big meets by flying halfway across the country and two of the regional meets by driving there. brought my friend (girl, also on the forum) with me to the big one and one of the regionals.

there were 50-60 people at the big meet, and we hung out most of a weekend. one of the admins had a large house with a pool and space for poker/hanging out. the locals showed the travelers some cool sights/restaurants, and we had a great time. for the regional meets, i/we would drive up for a day trip and go to a zoo/museum/hangout place.

granted, i'm a guy, but none of the people who were at any of the meets freaked me out or seemed threatening in any way; i spent the night in one their houses at a regional meet and never felt weird at all.

Only person I've met up with from SD is Jenni and she's awesome. I've met up with a pretty good bit of people from Reddit though. It's only been awkward for the first few minutes.

i met up with this person and then we gots nekkids. haha all kidding aside. i've met a few people online here and there and nothing out of the ordinary imo.

Definitely do it if you can! I would love to hang out with her again. She's a hoot and a half and her kids are totally adorable.





Also actually the boy I'm "talking to/dating" now, I met on Reddit...I'm going to visit him in a month. Should be interesting after talking every day for 3 months.

I met 3 people in RL that I had previously only spoken to online. It was mildly awkward at first, but that passed pretty quickly. In fact, I slept with 2 of them on the first day and the third on the 2nd day.

Ive only met up with one person, a local guy messaged me on myspace, we chatted as friends for a couple weeks and decided to meet up at the mall to hang out. Ended up closing the night out with a kiss and 6 years later we're still together! Ive had a few awkward experiences with talking on the phone to people ive chatted with online. One of the loungers here i was friends with just ended up wanting phone sex and wouldnt stop texting me!

I met DW on match.com. Met several others from match that I'm still friends with. Also have hung out with friends that I met on AIM back in the 90s and early 2000s.

I've also met several Loungers. Everyone I've met has been really friendly.

There is some lingering talk of 4-5 people from the Gamer's Lounge meeting up at PAX East next year. Should be fun if we can make it work.
