Meeting people from the innerwebz

Has anyone ever met anyone they only know from online? How was it? Awkward? Fun? Unexpected? Interesting?

How would you feel about someone you've only talked to online and on the phone staying with you the first time you met them?

Someone I have been chatting with online/on the phone for 6 years is coming to town and staying with me for 3 days. I feel like I know her well online, but I'm not sure how I feel about her staying with me for 3 days. I'm excited about it, but apprehensive at the same time. It doesn't help that I have a touch of social anxiety to begin with. Then you hear horror stories about people who you thought you knew online being false. Thoughts? Is this unwise? Experiences?

Hmm...I've only met one person from forums IRL once (an e-buddy from an online DIY forum - we'd been exchanging info for years ) and it worked out great....h(e took us on a covert tour of the local F1 racing track in his street car.) There are a few folks here on SD that I'd love to meet IRL and invite them to stay in our home, but that's after years of consideration of their overall makeup (I'd like to think that many of the "good eggs" know who they are.) Wink

So, maybe - after a very long vetting process.

Whee I like eggs!

When I was in San Francisco last week I met up with a friend I've known online for nearly 10 years. We were on a mommy message board when we were pregnant with our oldest kids and have stayed in touch on our own private board with a dozen other women and now on Facebook. I didn't stay with her, but we went out for dinner and she drove me around town and showed me her city. Not awkward at all and I'd do it again in a heartbeat with someone I've known as well as her.

I wish I'd had more time so I could have met up with arj, but I only had one free evening and I couldn't miss the chance to see my friend who I've "known" for so long.

I have met one person who I "knew" from online before. Spent the day with her. It was enjoyable, but I must say she was much different from what I expected. I wouldn't say it was awkward, at least after the first 15 minutes of so. I'd like to see her in person again some day.

I would love to met up with a few of my friends IRL from SD. It would be strange at first, I'm sure. They might be a bit different then what I expected , but not by much.

I've met Jenni. She's as awesome IRL as she is on line. Plan on meeting up with her again (and maybe Autumn once the restraining order is lifted).

Met Dark_Saber several times. Cool laid back guy.

i've met the sd mods/admins. it's always super fun. interact with them on a daily basis so meeting them was nothing....it was like i've known them foreverrrrr.

wouldn't let them in my house tho'. that thelnel52 will clean out my fridge and brigdeburner will steal my cookies.

Generally different levels of good. Done it enough times it's hard to think of it as something other than the norm--more than a hundred times, I'd say.

Done that a few times, too. Sometimes with just an individual person, but more often when organizing groups. I used to do a lot more entertaining and back then I'd host get-togethers that would last as long as five days with 20-35 people from around the world.

Back then the get-togethers were always great, in part because that was before the whole world was on the net, so I'd have a house full of scientists and techno-types. Being on the net was more of a unifying quality back then.

I met a couple players before on a tennis forum IRL and we hit a few times. They were really nice, I have not met any other people on other forums, because I tend to only wander into a couple, here, Tennis, and Biking. I would not mind meeting others though. I really enjoy listening to people's stories.
