uhh... snorkel/scuba diving =/= having fish as pets in your home.
snorkel/scuba diving + spear = dinner for the most of us here. Also catching live reef fish is not the easiest thing to do without the proper equipment and I wouldn't want to risk my hand getting bitten by a Morey eel or a suprise by a shark so I can save a few bucks on fish...

"Ammonia exists in an aquarium in two forms: free or unionized ammonia (NH3) and ionized ammonia, called ammonium (NH4). Free ammonia is highly toxic compared to ammonium (not that this means you can relax if your ammonia is in the form of ammonium), and the proportion of toxic to less toxic ammonia depends on several factors, the most important being pH and temperature."

nice quote but, live plants and activated carbon (both present) contribute to remove the ammonium even in a brand new tank, so the forward reaction (see equilibrium in chemistry) NH3 => NH4 occurs

I like the fact that is has a fluorescent light bulb and not a standard bulb. I think this makes a big difference. It shows the fish colors much better (especially tropical fish) and the colors of the rocks.

But is this really the image the website provides? It is horrible. It looks like something is missing.
I saw that too. lol
Somebody went crazy with the round eraser brush in photoshop.

I have had a 10 gallon LED kit from Marineland for about 5 months. I have learned a lot about fish. Ick and fin rot claimed a few platties. One of my mollies gave birth to 10 fry. Recently, I added two mystery snails.

I would like to go bigger, get a few more fish and others but really like the LED lighting. Does anyone know if there is an LED light system for this tank?

Also, If I just want to transfer all my fish into the new tank, can I just use the water from the existing tank and place all the fish and snails along with it to start it out?

Thanks in advance.

just saw some led lights at petco yesterday. they came in various sizes, with one that would accomodate this size tank (although, i'm not sure if you remove the top that comes with this tank or not).

What is everyone going to stock this with?

Right now I'm thinking about starting with 8 danios, 5 guppies, 3 corys, and 1 swordtail. Opinions?

Be careful with the guppies as they are prolific breeders (and live-bearers at that so there is no egg dinner for other inhabitants to eat!). You would need to plan NOW for what you will do when the numbers start to get out of hand. Local fish clubs, friends, etc. but it is important to realize if you go with easy breeders it will happen.

my only question is why would anyone who lives in Honolulu, Hawaii want a fish tank?
Are you serious? Can you bring the ocean into your home? I live nearby the ocean but it doesn't mean there are fish readily available in my home without an aquarium. laugh out loud

Should be fine, all are hardy fish. Would worry about the guppies, they may multiply but will rarely overrun a tank of this size, can alway give the surplus away or raise the fry in a rubbermaid tub.

Years ago, I was given a pregnant female guppy. Within a week, she gave birth to about 30 frys. After a few months, the frys grew up and gave birth to even more frys. Before I knew it, I had hundreds of guppies. I had to give them away as they were outgrowing my 30G tank.

If you don't want this to happen to you, just buy all male guppies. They are usually the prettier/fancier ones than female guppies.

I would not advise putting any more money into a 10 gallon tank. Upgrade to at least a 30 gallon if you find you are really enjoying the hobby. You can find a whole setup on craigslist really cheap with people trying to get rid of them.

As for re-using the water, the water is not the issue. Cycling a tank involves creating an artificial ammonia spike in order to foster an environment which produces ammonia eating bacteria (beneficial bacteria because ammonia is harmful to fish). These bacteria live on your filter media, plants, tank ornaments, and gravel. If you get a new tank, use all new water, but cycling will only take a few days if you reuse the same filter media, plants, etc. Just make sure you have a heater and the temperature of the water in the new tank is equal to that of the old tank as you don't want your fish enduring radical changes in temperature. I would also recommend you keep the 10 gallon aquarium as a hospital tank. If you quarantine any new fish here for 30 days it will greatly reduce the likelihood they will introduce fin rot or other diseases into your established tank. Also if any of your fish get sick you can separate them. Good luck! PM me if you need any issues or have any questions.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at getting the 29 kit, as posted, but was curious about the LED lighting options.

I thought that the bacteria were in the water and that was what was important. I guess not. lol

I was also thinking about using the 10 as a hospital tank but I am not entirely sure how to set it up. Do i just empty it and put it in the garage til I need it or what? Thanks...
