Does anyone know where I can get a tank stand for a slick price?
I used an old dresser that I added 1x4s in the middle of for extra support. I also used some foam board from Lowes to put the tank on. That kept imperfections from causing pressure points that might break the tank.

Just another idea.

What is everyone going to stock this with?

Right now I'm thinking about starting with 8 danios, 5 guppies, 3 corys, and 1 swordtail. Opinions?

Thanks for the info. I was looking at getting the 29 kit, as posted, but was curious about the LED lighting options.

I thought that the bacteria were in the water and that was what was important. I guess not. lol

I was also thinking about using the 10 as a hospital tank but I am not entirely sure how to set it up. Do i just empty it and put it in the garage til I need it or what? Thanks...

i wish you could check petco's in-store inventory from their site. I went to the store in Camarillo, CA and there was a big spot on the shelf where my new aquarium should have been.

This is our first aquarium. What are the best places to buy some decorations? Any recommendations.

TIA

You can always call first.. Hope you asked if they had more in the back because at the location I picked it up there weren't any on display and they had to pull more out from the back. Assuming you asked someone if they were out of stock and they really had none, you could always get a rain check or have them check other near by locations which may have some in stock. Seen as this brand is one of the standard kits that they normally sale I am pretty sure they restock pretty quickly.

Check Youtube you can make your own decorations very cheap compared to purchase. There is a guy named joey who does great videos on how to make your own tanks, stands, canopies etc.....

lots of good info there

It would be wise to invest in a canister filter rather than using the hang on the back filter that comes with this kit. Canister filters work better and require less maintenance (I only rinse the media in mines out twice a year). The only downside is the high upfront cost, but you will be saving money by not having to buy expensive cartridge filters so often. Most canister filters will cost more than the price of this tank kit though.

4. Water changes are mandatory (this is just to reiterate, not in argument to the quoted comments). 10-50% once a week, depending on how stocked/fed/etc. When you do a water change you need to use the SAME TEMPERATURE water as in your tank. You also ideally need to add in dechlorinator PRIOR to adding the water to the tank (this is only applicable for smaller tanks where you fill with buckets). If you cannot do this or you have a huge tank that fills from a water line you need to dose the tank with enough dechlorinator for the TOTAL VOLUME OF THE TANK (very important). I do 50% changes once a week. Doesn't take much longer than a 25% water change and is a nice way to be sure the water parameters are not getting too out of whack. Topping up (only water evaporates, all the crud and toxins are still in the water) IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!

HTH
I never had to do anything like this with any of my freshwater tanks. Once every couple of months I'd do a pretty big water change but that's about it.
