Samsung got wrecked:

* Jury finds Samsung infringement of Apple utility, design patents for some (though not all) products
* Jury upholds Apple utility, design patents
* Jury upholds Apple trade dress '983
* Jury finds Samsung "diluted" Apple's registered iPhone, iPhone 3 and "Combination iPhone" trade dress on some products, not on others
* No Apple infringement of Samsung utility patents
* Jury found Samsung violated antitrust law by monopolizing markets related to the UMTS standard

Damages owed by Samsung:
* $2.3 billion and counting

I'm not entirely sure where to look now. I just heard them describe the patent on the news. They basically have a patent on touch-screen technology (using fingers to navigate, pinch-to-zoom, etc) even though some of the tech involved wasn't invented by them
Full disclosure here, in case you weren't aware, I work for them.

I've heard similar stuff, but honestly, people yell and blame Apple, but it's not Apple's fault. They were granted the patent. It's up to the other companies to not infringe on those patents. You're entirely right, that if the patents really didn't deserve to be granted, it needs to be on the US patent office, not on Apple.

Don't be mad at Apple, be mad at the USPO.

So you're saying you should be allowed to trademark how software and a GUI looks, but not physical hardware design? So anyone should be able to copy what a Dell Inspiron looks like and market it as a different brand? Or a MacBook Pro and market it as a different brand? Really?
No, I'm saying that it's beyond obtuse to trademark something so general as a rectangle with a glass screen. They wanna fight it out because of some so called UI pinch to zoom or other intellectual infringement, that's one thing....but a general shape? Nope, I don't agree on that.

Not to mention the idea that 9 fiftysomethings who are probably amazed at "The Facebook" and "The Google" have the competence to sit in judgment here.

Here we see patents doing counter to what they are intended to do, which is promote innovation. There were no software patents in the '80s, when Xerox pioneered the GUI. Would a young and inexperienced Apple have withstood the legal assault from a much larger company like Xerox? Early Steve Jobs quoted Picasso (great artists steal); more recently he said: "I'm going to destroy Android because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to to go thermonuclear on this."

Apple = do as I say not as I do.

No. I'm mad at both. I'm mad at the US for granting such ridiculously wide patents, and I'm mad at the person at Apple who made the decision to abuse those inappropriately wide patents to grab for even more money than they already possess. Apple deserves just as much blame as the US Patent office.

Agreed. I always think it's comical when people comment that individuals ought to lead a highly moral life, unless it's business, in which case you're free to rape, pillage, and terrorize in pursuit of a fast buck.

I was watching this go down live earlier and holy shit...Samsung got jack squat.

Apple didn't get everything but 1 billion 51 million something is pretty good.

The shitty thing about this is now Apple has precedent to cite and can pretty much use it as threat to every other tech company out there.

Crap, crap, crap.

I'm mad at both of them, but this is bad for all future tech and mobile companies.

Although I hate the verdict considering how it'll affect customers' options for smartphones, I have no sympathy for Samsung. I know ppl who have worked for them. They're a horrible company to work for.

Post-trial motions.
Injunctions are coming up. Samsung wants them to happen after any Rule 50 motions.

According to Koh's calendar, September 20th is the soonest she can have a hearing regarding any preliminary injunctions.

She wants to give Samsung 14 days to put things together. Samsung attorney Kevin Johnson thinks that just not enough time given the amount of evidence in this case.

laugh out loud No shit Samsung?
