it wasnt hyped by APPLE for months... they didnt tell anyone about it until i think a week ago?
that is a very naive way to look at it; Apple is known for planting leaks to strategic media people/outlets and projecting a very defined narrative of their products, all of which culminate in what we saw yesterday: weeks and months of indirect buildup for an event which promises a glimpse at the future. other first-tier manufacturers (Motorola, Samsung, HTC, etc.) might have a contest or localized launch party for their flagships, but nothing close to this. saying Apple has no part in the often-unfounded mythos of fantastic innovation/invention surrounding the company and its products (especially the iPhone) is simply wrong.

Quote from 420 :
It's called marketing and it's what sells products. No one needs NFC or wireless charging. After all, only 8% of all merchants have NFC POS terminals installed and wireless charging isn't really wireless, since you still need to plug the charging station into the wall. Nonetheless, marketing hype has convinced people that they need these features. I'm not at all wow'ed by the iPhone 5, but it seems silly to criticize Apple, or any company for that matter, for a successful marketing campaign. It seems more sensible to criticize Americans for being so easily taken in by marketing hype.
i'm not saying that it's a bad thing overall; of course it's good for the company and its employees. they're going to move upwards of 50 million units this year, even though the only new features they're putting forth have been standard in most phones released in the last year. that's no small feat, and job well done.

Apple simply annoys me in the same way Monster cables does: both claim what i believe to be a dubious (if not outright incorrect) assertion of superiority and leverage the ignorance of their customer base to make their products appear better than what they really are (again, personal opinion). of course, all businesses do this at some level, but the arrogance and refusal to acknowledge any narrative that in any way presents their products in a bad light (iPhone4 reception issue, anyone?) seems to be much more prominent for Apple than in any other company i can think of. that, along with the Apple acolytes who believe and relay that pseudo-information, project the same arrogance, and refuse objective evidence of their products' few shortcomings, are my issues.

if i owned an iPhone 4S, you bet i'd be upgrading to a 5 for the larger screen and much better data speeds, and anyone saying those aren't good features is delusional. however, in my opinion, anyone claiming anything on this phone (or any of the last few iPhones) is revolutionary or puts them solidly ahead of any other smartphones is just as delusional.

yeah….. oh wait no. Apple takes security and leaks very seriously and quashes them quickly. apple had no interest in showing their cards early and if they wanted to generate hype, then they would be making a whole ton of "fake" leaks

um, that's pretty much what happened; one of the major complaints about this launch was that everybody knew everything beforehand due to the huge number of leaks. there is a pattern of strategic leaks to a few specific media outlets (most prominently the WSJ) at opportune times, and based on all the tech sites i read, it's pretty much assumed that Apple does them purposefully.

...There have been fewer instances of wild rumors. Instead, it's been based more around pragmatism, using either tangible leaks or sources that have a solid track record. Think of the perennial leaks from the Wall Street Journal or the increasingly well-established sourcing from iMore and The Loop. Whether you're conspiracy-minded or not, it's been hard to ignore the sheer number of claims that have tamped down expectations rather than inflated them...

...The Wall Street Journal, again leaking what may be "official" info at a strangely opportune time, recently said the next iPhone would support LTE tech all over the world...

...The reviews of Google's Nexus 7 tablet started coming out the first week of July, and they were almost universally positive. The Nexus 7 is without question the best-reviewed tablet on the market other than the iPad.

That same week, within one day of each other, Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal both reported as fact that Apple is preparing a smaller iPad.

Bloomberg, reported by Peter Burrows and Adam Satariano, on July 4: "Apple Said to Plan Smaller iPad to Vie With Google Nexus".

The WSJ, reported by Lorraine Luk, on July 5: "Apple Preps for Smaller Tablet".

If you think these stories appearing within a day of each other in the two most-respected business publications in the U.S. — at the same time the Nexus 7 reviews began appearing and the device started shipping to customers — is merely coincidental and not a strategic competitive leak from Apple PR, then I would like to invite you to play in my poker game...

The disappointment just tells us one thing: Apple fans focus on the appearance of the new iphone more than the functionalities.

I read in an article somewhere that it's possible AT&T will let people keep the unlimited data plan, but not allow FaceTime over 4g.
You can use skype over data right now.

Not overly shocking. They abhor their unlimited plan now that the business model has changed and they can make more money off of tiered pricing and overage fees. If it wasn't for it being a total PR nightmare and competition that still has unlimited data plans, they'd just axe it altogether and tell their customers to Censored3 off.

Solid proof that marketing is what sells products - and that most people are idiots. :/

I watched the keynote last night...and...I did not enjoy it. First, it seems like they were rushing for some reason. They were all speeding through the iPhone 5 features. It was very, very weird.

I'm used to Steve being on stage and introducing it, giving slight moments of pause for people to applause and just the way he wants to show people new product videos...it really felt like Steve loved what he was doing, and wanted the whole crowd to love it as well.

I also noticed Phil screwed up when he was finishing up the iPhone 5 "And that's iOS5...the most amazing iPhone since iPhone." laugh out loud He meant iPhone5.

But it's all too corporate now with Apple. The "charm" isn't there anymore. Steve was a dick in many aspects, but he knew how to get people to love him and knew how to present. It feels like the mantra has changed at Apple with Cook..he's still a good guy and all..but it feels just so..corporate. It's fine for a company that has always been known to do it that way, but Apple to go from enthusiastic to corporate, just feels so empty.

I didn't even get through to after the iPhone 5. Only to the iTunes part and then had to shut if off. Usually I watch it all the way to the end. It's just not the same without Steve anymore. I've never truly liked Apple, but Steve was a damn good salesman, because it felt...real.
