I am tired of all of these bandwagon PBS fans.

All I see is a bunch of retards pretending to be PBS viewers because Mitt Romney doesn't like PBS and wants to get rid of the CPB.

Seriously, fark the whole lot of them. I hope they all die choking on ham sandwiches.

I hate the all of the people who are part of the new PBS is cool, and I am also cool because I watch PBS trend. The old viewers, the ones who are loyal viewers are the ones that I have real respect for.

These people, the new fans are no different than the people who didn't care for/hated America before 9/11 and suddenly became neocons right after the towers were brought down.

And just so you know, I watch the newshour ever night, and most of the their primetime programs. I've got much love for my local PBS and NPR stations even though they have tried to censor programming and love to pimp the catholic church on their channels.

Is it really that much of a burden to Christian ppl to have two random ppl who they don't know, may never know, and who probably lives hundreds or thousands of miles from them be married? Does it really affect those Christian ppl that much where they believe the government shouldn't allow such unions?

Remember, it wasn't all that long ago when religious ppl thought marriage between different ethicities was sacriligious and unnatural.
You are trying to argue with someone who doesn't care about the issue. laugh out loud

It just isn't something that the federal government should have a say in either way, or be giving preferences to either way.

The federal government? Of course not.
The individual states are in a far better position to make decisions regarding the education of the children in the state. How can the federal government make unilateral decisions that will fit and make sense everywhere?

You want to trim some real fat from the budget? Eliminate the US Department of Education and give all that money back to the states to use in a more efficient manner for education.
Sure. But, a lot of the state budgets come from the federal government. I don't think most states are that autonomous financially.

You do realize that the government doesn't have an money to give to the states until after it takes it away from the people right? Or borrows it from China?

Just keep repeating to yourself. ...of the people, by the people--of the people, by the people.

The government can't give anything to anyone without first taking it away from someone else. And in the case of the federal government it spelled out clearly in the Constitution the things it is responsible for. Anything else automatically falls under the control of the individual states.

Certain things should be universal, not state by state. Why should one state get better education than another?

Why should the people of one state get better health than another?

Why does tailoring education (or health) to fit the specific needs of each state mean that it will be worse for some? It should make it better for everyone. It isn't realistic to think that a universal system will fit every situation.

"One Size Fits All" usually means that it doesn't fit anyone very well.

z2g only gave one example. Another, more important example is hospitals won't allow anyone but family members into the ICU. Another is if a gay couple has a child only the biological parent has custody rights.

So who is in a better position to decide who should be on a visitor list--the government or the individuals?

Adoption procedures should cover custody issues. There are relatively simple ways around the problematic issues that should be done by everyone now, not just gay couples. Nobody should rely on default procedures as a reasonable excuse to avoid making advance preparation for emergencies.

Exactly. These all were the rights I was eluding to. I think a gay couple should be afforded these rights too.

You want grandpa on SS to pay tax? The 47% isn't only freeloader, they include a wide range of low income earners. Even Romney admitted he was wrong, probably so Obama can't use it against him in a debate, but still.

So let's not throw out numbers pulled from a politician's ass.
Only if grandpa makes the money that many retirees make. You know, the ones with two homes, and RV, a boat, those that play golf twice a week, etc. I never said anything about those that make very low income. I think it's high time we quit paying for our presidents to take lavish vacays on our dime. If they don't want to go to camp David, then let them pay. Maybe they could use the savings to protect our ambassadors.

Let me give you an example of what I see on a regular basis. I know a couple that have been living together for 20 years. They have 5 children, who all carry their mother's last name. She claims to not know the fathers whereabouts. She gets food stamps, welfare, section 8 housing assistance and Medicaid. The kids get free breakfast and lunch and school uniforms and school supplies.she signs them up for the community Christmas, so Santa makes a big haul by their house. Both she and her boyfriend (father of all 5) both have good jobs. She claims head of household and makes out like a bandit. He uses his parents address, claims them both and gets a healthy return. They have been reported at least twice that I know of, but nothing is ever done. I figure their take is over $30,000/ year and together they make about $80,000. They have learned how to work the system. I ask you again...how can we fix this?

I think we need to quit paying people to squeeze out kids year after year. Make them work and provide daycare instead. I know people who spent their entire childhood on welfare and in public housing, who then started having babies of their own when they got up into their teens. And yes we need to crack down on people like the ones in your example too.

It's beyond repair. I work at a non-profit that provides numerous services (health care, meals on wheels, adult daycare, electric bill payments, rental payments, etc) to our county residents and see this type of stuff on a daily basis. Nothing we can do though because they fit the "criteria".

You are so right about the cycle. When I taught at a technical college, we had students that were there through the Welfare to Work program. Many of them looked at it as a chance to get out of the system, but I was told on more than one(like 200) occasions that just as many wanted to be home drawing their check. One told me that she would keep having kids until one was a spcial needs child so she could stay home forever. It mad by blood boil! Ranting I think that there should be a period of time and a sliding scale that should be followed to "wean" people off, that are able bodied and employable. And w need to instill the idea that minimum wage was never many to be a living wage for a breadwinner. It is an ntey level and should mak you strive for a promotion and a raise. Not spent to stay on it your whole life.

My quibble was with the 47% figure. I don't doubt these bottom feeders are part of the 47% but what % of the 47% are they? There will always be a freeloader problem and we need to crack down on those who game the system and I wish I knew an easy answer to that problem, but I don't. Limiting the # of kids that can receive benefits seem like a reasonable start.

I spent about 10 years working for non-profs, including one that offered mental health counseling, CASA, autism support, teen leadership, to name but a few. I know that it's hard. I think that there are some ways to help with these issues. We have a local group that does weatherizations for the elderly to help lower their utilities. A local culinary school helps with our meals on wheels, and local grocery stores provide adult diapers, whose packags have been damaged, to the autism support program. I believe it works best when locals take care or locals because we can b more creative and truly seve those In the most need, instead of blanket federal programs.
