If, by chance the bank is dumb enough to reverse the charges...how much fun will the dealer have getting triple the cost of fees, AND the $500 he rightfully owes them? Facepalm

He wrote the dealership a check, under his own free will. I don't see how he can dispute it
The bank is not going to step in and refund his money here. no chance of that ..

Like I said, if he's willing to go in there for 4-5 hours, he might be able to talk the dealer into refunding his money, but this is going to be a "learn the hard way" lesson.
