I released 1500 live ladybugs into my garden this evening! The praying mantis cocoons haven't opened yet. Organic pest control FTMFW! woot

I also planted my fruit cocktail and Asian variety pear trees today. And some fennel b/c it attracts like EVERY kind of beneficial insect to your garden. And my pineapple mint is ready to go in and the asparagus. And I thinned the radishes. Did you know: radish greens taste peppery, like a mild radish? They're delicious in a salad! yummy
I was going to order lady bugs as well, but they've flocked to my garden already so I was able to save a few bucks. Two years ago I purchased 2 mantid eggs, and the following year I found 5 of them around the yard. I can't count how many I've found this year, but mantids are the organic gardeners that keep on giving apparently.

Did you hatch them inside and take the baby mantids out, or just stick the cocoons to a branch outside? I can't decide which way to go...

I just put them in my raspberry and blackberry bushes high enough so that a mouse couldn't eat them and left them to hatch on their own. We have a screen porch that is separate from the house, and they tend to hang out there now and wait for food and sex.

It's amazing how food affects my body. We had been detoxed up until this afternoon when Egg Man told me to bring the family over for a cookout. I had 3 dogs in bondage (hot dog cut in half, stuff with cheese and jalepenos, and tied up with string to be cooked), potato salad, baked beans, deviled eggs, and a hamburger. While I didn't have any bread, everything I ate was processed and had preservatives. Within an hour, my poison ivy that was somewhat under control made my hands swell up like balloons, the poison ivy on my ear swelled so much it started bleeding, and I felt like absolute shit. I think I just set my body back a few days, but at least I can still say I haven't ever turned down good company and good tasting food.
