Applebee’s fires waitress who posted receipt from pastor complaining about auto-tip

An Applebee's waitress who posted a receipt with a note from a pastor complaining about the automatic gratuity added to the bill on the Internet was fired on Wednesday after the pastor complained to her manager.

Chelsea Welch, the waitress, wrote in an email to Yahoo News that the pastor (who has since been identified as Alois Bell) told Welch's manager at the St. Louis-area Applebee's that the ensuing firestorm had "ruined" her reputation.

The female pastor has also has written a 28-page volume examines spiritual nourishment, complete with references to candy and junk food. The $10 paperback is titled "Watch the Hand that Feeds You." From her size, it appears she doesn't like to follows her own advice.

Since when did a gratuity become mandatory?
Always seems to be the shitty waitstaff that feels entitled enough to complain about not getting enough tips when they deliver shitty service. I know the last time I was at an Applebees, I saw my waiter exactly twice. Once to take my order, then once to drop off the check. Food delivery and drink refills were handled by the bus boys. She got a nickel. Bus boys were each handed 20%. Auto gratuitys are bullshit and I ahve split up bills to get around them in the past. All they are is a license for the service to be crappy.

I hate auto gratuity, but I've never stiffed a server. If the pastor disagrees with the auto gratuity, take it out on Applebee's, not the waitress.

Several state supreme courts have ruled that a gratuity is not a legally enforceable debt. A restaurant can put on their menu that an 18% gratuity will be automatically added for parties of X or more, but it is illegal not to remove that additional charge upon the request of the customer.

People who do things like that shouldn't eat at restaurants. They should just stay home and be cheap there.
Quote from Frogstar :
Or at the very least, complain to the manager while you're at the restaurant, rather than stiffing the waitstaff over corporate policy they have no control over, and being snarky about it to boot.
Iagree

Is it really necessary to write a nasty note on the receipt?

I think it's hilarious she's all upset that the server posted a photo of it. You wrote it, why are you upset if it goes public? Maybe you should think about writing something like that a little harder next time. What a bitch.

Quote from Jabbit :
It is mandatory for a restaurant to pay a server the difference between the ~$2/hr base pay + tips so they at LEAST meet minimum wage. I don't think anyone really does that though. Waiters and waitresses probably commit the most tax fraud out of any profession too.
I would argue illegal drugs and arms dealers probably commit more tax fraud. Tongue

Nice Guy Eddie: C'mon, throw in a buck!
Mr. Pink: Uh-uh, I don't tip.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't tip?
Mr. Pink: Nah, I don't believe in it.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't believe in tipping?
Mr. Blue: You know what these chicks make? They make shit.
Mr. Pink: Don't give me that. She don't make enough money that she can quit.
Nice Guy Eddie: I don't even know a phucing Jew who'd have the balls to say that. Let me get this straight: you don't ever tip?
Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.
Mr. Blue: Hey, our girl was nice.
Mr. Pink: She was okay. She wasn't anything special.
Mr. Blue: What's special? Take you in the back and suck your dick?
Nice Guy Eddie: I'd go over twelve percent for that.

Mr. Pink: Look, I ordered coffee. Now we've been here a long farking time and she's only filled my cup three times. When I order coffee, I want it filled *six* times.
Mr. Blonde: Six times. Well, what if she's too farking busy?
Mr. Pink: The words "too farking busy" shouldn't be in a waitress's vocabulary.
Nice Guy Eddie: Excuse me, Mr. Pink, but I think the last farking thing you need is another cup of coffee.

Mr. Pink: I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's phuced up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government farks in the ass on a regular basis. Look, if you ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And as for this non-college bullshit I got two words for that: learn to phucin' type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big phucin' surprise.

You're talking like tiping and the restaurant business model is some new thing in 2013?
I am not saying it is a new thing...that doesn't mean it isn't completely flawed.

The Penny isn't a new thing...it is still worthless, archaic, and needs to be replaced.

Quote from Frogstar :
Presumably because the restaurant business was large enough to lobby for it successfully however many years ago?

Because you're the customer, anywhere you shop, you're paying the owner's individual bills, they're just not all laid out separately on the receipt. You are aware that we tip servers in this country, so if you don't factor that into what the meal will cost, you're just deliberately being a bonehead. It's not like this is some new thing.
I can't tell if the 1st part was sarcasm...I have no idea when tipping became automatic / socially required.

I am well aware of a lot of things, but that won't stop me from bitching that it is being done incorrectly.

Why not just have a 30% restocking fee added to all of our grocery items? As long as we are aware of it...why not? Ohhh, and of course...we need the 5% lighting fee and the 40% cooler fee...you gotta have that. All our items can cost under a dollar soon enough!!!

Quote from Bareborn :
Now tipping is basically an instant reward system in a perfect tipping situation.
You serve a table of 6, a co-worker serves a table of 2. You're both on the same hourly wage(curties "pay them more than minimum wage"). How is it fair/even/justified to pay the guy whos doing 6 people the same as the guy doing 2 people? And no the guy with two tables doesnt necessarily have more tables to serve.
So then pay them on a standard!!!!

I see your "You have never waited" and raise you a "You have never worked in a warehouse". You think the guy that works a forklift running fridges onto a truck gets paid the same thing as a guy that is picking an order for a McDonalds store? Hell no. They get paid by the TYPE of the box, how heavy they all weigh, how far they had to travel and how much they have to lift. It is all pre-set and obvious when you type in the order. Right in front of you. If you have 6 and they have 2 people...you carry 3 times the plates, you get paid more.

It is up to your boss to make sure you are working your ass off and to make you earn your paycheck, since he is the one paying it...just like every other farking job in the world. I have to make sure my customers are happy too.

How about this for you...say there are TWO people at two tables...the one gets pop and the other gets water. You deserve to get paid more than your waiter friend because the pop is $3 (you get ~$0.60) and the waters are free? Yet, if you were paying by Standards, you'd BOTH get paid the exact same amount because you both were delivering DRINKS.

I don't know. The Smoking Gun article says she claimed she left a $6 cash tip, but the quote from the waitress on the Yahoo link seems to indicate she was stiffed Dontknow
But that's about 18%, so why would she bitch about an 18% tip if that's how much she was going to tip anyway? Story doesn't add up, is she claiming to have paid and left a tip before she saw the receipt?

Black on black bitching? Dontknow

Waitress was an idiot for posting this online. She tried to play it off by saying it was a joke, or she found humor in it.

She got what she deserved which was being fired..... I'm sure some of y'all would throw a tizzy fit if one of the siteop's here posted enough info publicly here to ID you. Hell, the mods in the Podium removed the info that was made public by a blogger of that reporter in New York who publicly outed all of the gun owners (including women on witness protection and under restraining orders from abusive folks).

If she had just cropped out the signature, she probably would have been okay.

That's not really comparable. Everyone expects anonymity on a site like this, that's pretty run-of-the-mill. Why would you expect that in a restaurant? Crazy

I can't remember the exact situation, but I know I've ordered just water at a bar before. I think I was just waiting on someone, and I still tipped even though it was free. Dontknow

I would let the police come. It's not a legally enforceable debt. The police should know and understand this. If they arrested me I would sue not only the restaurant, but I would sue the cops for wrongful arrest and make a fortune.

Posting a receipt for the world to see is publicly identifiable. Apparently some people did signature comparisons.
