People who do things like that shouldn't eat at restaurants. They should just stay home and be cheap there.

Or at the very least, complain to the manager while you're at the restaurant, rather than stiffing the waitstaff over corporate policy they have no control over, and being snarky about it to boot.

It is mandatory for a restaurant to pay a server the difference between the ~$2/hr base pay + tips so they at LEAST meet minimum wage. I don't think anyone really does that though. Waiters and waitresses probably commit the most tax fraud out of any profession too.

You're talking like tiping and the restaurant business model is some new thing in 2013?

Because you're the customer, anywhere you shop, you're paying the owner's individual bills, they're just not all laid out separately on the receipt. You are aware that we tip servers in this country, so if you don't factor that into what the meal will cost, you're just deliberately being a bonehead. It's not like this is some new thing.

Now tipping is basically an instant reward system in a perfect tipping situation.
You serve a table of 6, a co-worker serves a table of 2. You're both on the same hourly wage(curties "pay them more than minimum wage"). How is it fair/even/justified to pay the guy whos doing 6 people the same as the guy doing 2 people? And no the guy with two tables doesnt necessarily have more tables to serve.

Several state supreme courts have ruled that a gratuity is not a legally enforceable debt. A restaurant can put on their menu that an 18% gratuity will be automatically added for parties of X or more, but it is illegal not to remove that additional charge upon the request of the customer.

I don't know. The Smoking Gun article says she claimed she left a $6 cash tip, but the quote from the waitress on the Yahoo link seems to indicate she was stiffed
But that's about 18%, so why would she bitch about an 18% tip if that's how much she was going to tip anyway? Story doesn't add up, is she claiming to have paid and left a tip before she saw the receipt?

I am not saying it is a new thing...that doesn't mean it isn't completely flawed.

I can't tell if the 1st part was sarcasm...I have no idea when tipping became automatic / socially required.

I am well aware of a lot of things, but that won't stop me from bitching that it is being done incorrectly.

Why not just have a 30% restocking fee added to all of our grocery items? As long as we are aware of it...why not? Ohhh, and of course...we need the 5% lighting fee and the 40% cooler fee...you gotta have that. All our items can cost under a dollar soon enough!!!

You think the guy that works a forklift running fridges onto a truck gets paid the same thing as a guy that is picking an order for a McDonalds store? Hell no. They get paid by the TYPE of the box, how heavy they all weigh, how far they had to travel and how much they have to lift. It is all pre-set and obvious when you type in the order. Right in front of you. If you have 6 and they have 2 people...you carry 3 times the plates, you get paid more.

It is up to your boss to make sure you are working your ass off and to make you earn your paycheck, since he is the one paying it...just like every other farking job in the world. I have to make sure my customers are happy too. if you know what i mean

You deserve to get paid more than your waiter friend because the pop is $3 (you get ~$0.60) and the waters are free? Yet, if you were paying by Standards, you'd BOTH get paid the exact same amount because you both were delivering DRINKS.

I would argue illegal drugs and arms dealers probably commit more tax fraud.

That's not really comparable. Everyone expects anonymity on a site like this, that's pretty run-of-the-mill. Why would you expect that in a restaurant?
