Formula One 2013 *possible spoilers in thread*

Things are off to a rocky start in testing. Ferrari's car caught fire and there are some gear box issues, while Hamilton's car had brake failure, causing a minor crash into the barrier, he wasn't hurt though.

And some really sad news today, David Coulthard's 35 year old sister has died at home of what appears to be a heart attack.

Yeah, it was an excellent race. Lots of fights and some interesting twists, and they actually showed the action live or did replays on the important parts.

DH said Nico had a problem with his wing, he couldn't remember if he hit someone or someone hit him.

how is it that other racing series can refuel cars without anything starting on fire, but F1, the most advanced series in the world, can't?

WTF is up with the drumming before the podium? I tell you this race doesn't belong on the calendar anymore.
The Bore Aing Grand prix sucked dirt for me. Alonso's race being effed up with the stupid DRS wing problem and Massa's 2 tyre failures. I wasn't complaining about the Pirellis before when Macca and RedBull were but this is ridiculous that a tyre fully falls off, not just off the cliff but litterally falls off, not human error Mark Webber style.
Loved the fact that RBR sent up Jill from engineering to get the trophy. In a region where women can't drive or walk without a male chaperon, this was truly funny to see that king or whomever give that trophy to her.

David Coulthard isn't a good interviewer so I don't think he should do those anymore but maybe we should just forego that stupid podium interviews. I like them at the beginning but now they just seem silly. Martin B was somewhat okay but the rest who have interviewed were just rubbish. DC really whats that on your shoes? really? I can't get them that high as I'm not a woman? WTF are you talking about?

Good to see Perez driving like he's got some more confidence in his car and giving a good battle. Didn't like his move on Alonso but then he got the same from Button. Kimi is continuing to show signs of brilliance even if there's no alcohol to be drunk after the race. DiResta had a good 4th. Good on him.

3 more stupid weeks before another race? come on if it's not the summer break, keep it at 2 weeks max. we already had a 3 weeks from malaysia to china.

Final thought, good to see that even without DRS, Alonso is as fast as the Mclarens with them. Smilie

not only that but the fuel isnt nearly as flammable as the fuel used in F1.

And NASCAR still does have the occasional pit fire from spilled gas from the catch can that gets ignited by something as little as a hot lugnut or a spark when a car leaving runs over a lugnut.
It's happened as recently as this year.

Its not like the old methanol blue flame days from IndyCar but it still happens in other series that do refuel.

"This latest version of the hard compound is much closer to the 2012 tyre, with the aim of giving the teams more opportunity to run a wider range of strategies in combination with the other compounds, which remain unchanged."

The new specification hard tyre will debut in Spain where, because of the high-energy demands of the Circuit de Catalunya, it will be used alongside the next-hardest tyre in the range: the white-marked medium compound.

For Monaco, Pirelli have selected their two softest compounds: the yellow-marked soft and red-marked supersoft. This is the same nomination that has been in place for the Principality for the last two years and is best-suited for the demands of the street circuit.

Finally, in Canada there will be a full step between the compounds, as Pirelli have selected the white-marked medium tyre and the red-marked supersoft compound.

The tire being the story is getting old. I think they should make 4 different compounds and keep it there and then allow the teams to have their choice of the 4 to run at the race. Pick your tires, then we'll color them softer or harder for the race but your competition won't know if those are hard med soft or super softs.

that's an interesting idea, but any time the teams can control things, they model the heck out of it on their super computers, then the races get boring because they never get forced into bad decisions.

I wonder if this would help, or if it would backfire on the FIA. With no immediate risk of a grid penalty looming over their heads, would it make some drivers bolder when they don't have any points? Scratchchin

Quote :
The reports said the new system could replace the mainly grid penalties and fines that are currently levied against drivers for on-track misbehavior.

The new system would see drivers tote up demerit points against their mandatory super license, with multiple indiscretions to add up to race bans.

"It's a complex question," Whiting is quoted as saying, "and we need to get the balance right because banning a driver is a serious issue.

"We will be monitoring offenses and running a (hypothetical) system in the background to see how it would all work if put into practice."

The Nuerburgring, the German race track known as Green Hell for its challenging Formula One course, goes on sale tomorrow after its owners failed to pay loans taken out to build hotels and a rollercoaster on the site.

Investors can submit bids starting tomorrow for the 379-hectare (937-acre) property, Jens Lieser, the lawyer managing the insolvency of owner Nuerburgring GmbH, said today by telephone. Bidders will probably include event organizers as well as automakers and suppliers that would use the tracks to test equipment, he said.

"The value of the property is between 120 million euros ($156 million) and priceless," Lieser said after a press conference held in Mainz to announce the auction. "We're talking about a motorsports icon."

In February, Hyundai Motor Co. (005380) [bloomberg.com] built a 4.4 million euro research center at The Nuerburgring with direct access to the tree-lined track dubbed Green Hell by driverJackie Stewart. The grounds for sale include the 21-kilometer (13-mile) North Loop and newer 5-kilometer Grand Prix circuit.

Investors can bid for the whole property or parts of it, Lieser said. The state government is expected to approve a law requiring the new owners to keep the site open to the public, he said. Bidding is set to end in September and the sale is expected be completed in the first quarter of 2014.
