Formula One 2013 *possible spoilers in thread*

Things are off to a rocky start in testing. Ferrari's car caught fire and there are some gear box issues, while Hamilton's car had brake failure, causing a minor crash into the barrier, he wasn't hurt though.

And some really sad news today, David Coulthard's 35 year old sister has died at home of what appears to be a heart attack.

A bit of a long read but a quite interesting article on the whole tire situation.

As many racing fans likely suspected, apparently there is an audience out there for Formula One racing in the U.S. According to NBC, the network's live broadcast of the Monaco Grand Prix [autoweek.com] this past Sunday morning was watched by nearly 1.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched Formula One race on U.S. television in six years, and up substantially over last year's race, which aired on Speed TV, according to Fast National data provided by the The Nielsen Company.

The Monaco Grand Prix, broadcast live on U.S. network television for the first time, was watched by 1.456 million viewers and scored a 1.0 household rating. It is the most-watched F1 race on U.S. television in six years, NBC says, since Fox broadcast the Canadian Grand Prix in the afternoon in 2007.

Viewership for the race was up 241 percent, NBC claimed, over last year's Monaco telecast on Speed, which drew 427,000 viewers, and was up 40 percent over Fox's four-race F1 average last year (1.038 million), all of which were broadcast in the afternoon.

I've also said that before the season everyone was freaking out about NBC... Now they've picked up almost all of the old on air talent, they've sent them to Monaco for almost four hours of race day coverage, and they promoted the heck out of the Monaco GP coverage. I think the naysayers now need something more specific to be upset about, especially with SPEED changing over to Fox Sports 1 in August nod

Speed has been dead to me since their new website change a few years ago. Then I realized how much I was missing out on the F1 coverage by visiting motorsports/ferrari/autosport forums. Then I learned to watch BBC / Sky coverage via the internet live without ads and love it. NBC did air it live so I was surprised to see F1 monaco on my channel at 4:30 but I still went with my feed.
I think fox/speed was doing a disservice to us in the US and wished bbcAmerica could have bought the rights but it looks like nbc is doing a decent job. I prefer bbc over sky since ted kravitz is nothing but a hyper screamer.

If NBC keeps playing the races live with minimal commercials/sidebyside then I might give the 2 amigos + diffey another go. Has will buxton's mike been changed so we can actually hear him now? All I ever heard was the cars going by.

Edit:
BTW the follow the leader in Monaco was nothing but rubbish. The Mercedes secret testing in Barcelona was total crap and they should be penalized 5 grid spots the next 2 races or open up testing for all teams except for Mercedes to even out the field. If no penalties are handed out, I don't see why the teams should not perform more of their own testing since the ban means nothing.

Tvhappy Cue scene from Senna where Senna is talking about F1 being about politics, about money, etc...

Buxton's mike was okay, Monaco has got to be the toughest race for the trackside reporters, everything is just right there, so many big buildings and the hillside don't give the noise much room to escape.
US Coverage will always have more commercials than the UK coverage, that's just the way it is Doh

I really enjoyed the full hour of pre-race coverage, although the switch from NBCSN to NBC to NBCSN got some people lost, especially when the race ran way late (not really that common, although it does happen). They probably shouldn't have scheduled a replay of the race for immediately following the post race coverage on NBCSN.

DH found out who won before we got to watch the race, he was not happy. Because the race ran so long and because our new Tivo recorded the later showing, he turned on the channel to see the three podium cars lined up at the end. So he saw the tail end of the live coverage as it switched over. Annoyed

I was upstairs cooking breakfast so didn't see that. Still trying to adjust to the new four channel Tivo, the new format is a PITA. nod

I'm not sure what it is with NBCSN, but multiple times my grid has been wrong 24 to 48 hours in advance, only to correct itself hours before an event. the other day the hockey game was listed at completely the wrong time Huh

I'm not sure who's fault that is, I suppose it's difficult this time of year, with NHL playoffs being the highest priority.

Apparently you missed the part where they also talked about how Ferrari had done the same type of "private testing" just before Alonso's win the previous round.

So basically, of the three real major teams in contention this year (McLaren being not one of them so far) only Red Bull has not had a "private test" for "safety reasons".

Seems like maybe Pirelli is playing favorites?
Or maybe they are working within the politics of Uncle Bernie and trying to make the other teams competitive by helping certain teams only...

I did miss that part about the ferrari testing, where was it done and what was being tested?

I'd say put Lotus-Renault in there as well since Kimi is scoring every single race. I wonder if Grojean is going to lose his seat with so many incidents.

So far from what I read, the Ferrari testing was done without this years car but with 2011's which are cars that belong to Corsa Clienti program and that is allowed and follows F1's rule. The Mercedes using this years cars is not allowed per the rules. I didn't know Ferrari tested tires recently but it was according to the rules and they didn't gain any advantage since it was on an old car. According to Pirelli, they said they asked Merc and Ferrari for non current cars - Ferrari 2011s and Merc 2013. So now that is cleared, it seems Pirelli are trying to save Merc's by saying they were testing 2014's tires. WTF This whole thing is a mess.

Anyone catch todays race? nice battles with Alonso moving up the field and Massa drove a great race making it into the points. I can't believe DiResta drove so well on those tires on his first stint. WTF it probably would have lasted for 30K miles like our normal car tires. LOL Better race than I expected with yesterdays wet qualy.
