Anyone following the Carnival Triumph cruise ship story?

Carnival Triumph engine fire; lost power; tug boats pulling it to Mobile, AL.

linly [cbslocal.com]

The 500 or so McDonald's franchisees and executives onboard should at least be used to the conditions if they've spent much time in one of their restaurants.

We cruise on Carnival 5 months from today! laugh out loud (different ship though)

Passengers aboard the stranded ship will also receive a full refund, the statement said.

Yikes.
Huh

Why the "Yikes"?

I believe Carnival is also giving them a free future cruise, in addition to refunding the current one.

I can not believe that any of them would want to go on another Carnival cruise.

I hate flying already because I am supposed to trust a likely drunk pilot. The thought of getting on a ship for days and with my luck running into an absolutely obnoxious person the first of the trip that will not leave me alone the rest of the trip has so far deterred me from considering cruises anything other than torture. Embarrassment
I was forced on a cruise in Texas, work thing for DH and it was hell for me. The one time we went into the bar, a brawl broke out not five minutes after we entered so we left. The guy who started the brawl wound up spending the rest of the cruise in jail on the captains orders. Yep, they have a detention center on the ships.

Couldn't gamble in the very small casino as they allowed smoking in there and the smoke eaters were a joke, the place was full of cigarette smoke and I have asthma.

The one enjoyable thing I found to do, was a comedian who ran the karaoke show, he was pretty funny. But for whatever reason, after that first night they scrubbed the karaoke and had some bad/boring entertainer in that theater for the rest of the cruise.

Then on the last night of the cruise, someone in their 40's died in their cabin. Because it was an unexplained death, he wasn't ill when he boarded, the ship was met at dock that morning by the police and the coroner, to investigate the death. We were held on board at dockside for an additional four hours with nothing to eat as they were out of food, so no breakfast or lunch, just coffee and water. We drove so it wasn't so bad but most passengers missed their flight home.

And yes, it was a Carnival cruise.

Well, you can keep trying, but you will still not convince me to book a cruise Wink I had one overnight stay on a ship crossing the English channel. Ship was overbooked, so we lucky ones were sleeping on deck. Turned out we were lucky because the cabins were tiny and several people suffered panic attacks when one engine started to have hick ups (that captain speak on that ship for you) during the night.

laugh out loud Aw come on, we can go on a cruise together! Whee

I've taken the ferry between Belfast and Scotland before, which is just over two hours one way. According to DH, we had good weather for the trip. I can't imagine what it would be like in rough weather. EEK!

Those poor folks - if things weren't bad enough with the overflowing toilets - the ship's stabilizers are out so the ship rocks back and forth. Lot of folks on the ship sea sick and vomit is everywhere. Sick

"Without power, the ship's stabilizers are apparently not working, Nutt told The Associated Press, and the massive liner had been leaning to one side Sunday. By Monday afternoon, the ship seemed more upright, he said."

It's not like they're in the middle of the farking ocean and can just stay on the deck and puke over the side or anything.

They don't want to alert the sharks for when the ship sinks.

I would probably be this way if this was how my first cruise went. But obviously this is a very rare situation, so I wouldn't hesitate to go on another, having been on several in the past.

I doubt I would go on another anyway Hide. I thought the food was bad, and I got tired of being on the boat for so long. I'd rather be on the beach.

It's not for everyone. We'll might stop cruising every year after this summer. We go mainly for the ports, to visit new places, and we've hit the majority of the typical cruise ports after (soon to be) 8 cruises. We don't spend that much time on the beach, so a couple of beach days is sufficient for us. I've enjoyed the food for the most part - if you're used to Ruth's Chris or that level, you'll be disappointed. Outback is about as fancy as we usually do, so we've enjoyed cruise food. We love traditional seating in the main dining room, where we have "our" table for a week, same servers who get to know you and your preferences, etc. - it's one thing unique to cruising (unless you eat at the same restaurant a LOT).

I did enjoy the people that worked on board. They were all super friendly and a joy to talk to!

I also enjoyed the ports, but I'd rather fly somewhere and stay there a few days. We went boating at one port and that was fun. Yes, I know I'm the one that was just complaining about being on a boat laugh out loud.
