Anyone following the Carnival Triumph cruise ship story?

Carnival Triumph engine fire; lost power; tug boats pulling it to Mobile, AL.

The 500 or so McDonald's franchisees and executives onboard should at least be used to the conditions if they've spent much time in one of their restaurants.

We cruise on Carnival 5 months from today! laugh out loud (different ship though)

I went on the Carnival Triumph one year, and it was one of my favorite cruises! This won't stop me from cruising. Whee I'm still hoping to plan one for my honeymoon this year. Just maybe NCL instead of Carnival.

I'm thinking they were maybe 300 miles from Mobile, AL? Dontknow
I doubt lifeboats are designed to travel that far - they're designed to get you off the ship for later rescue.

Without power, the ship's stabilizers are apparently not working, Nutt told The Associated Press, and the massive liner had been leaning to one side Sunday. By Monday afternoon, the ship seemed more upright, he said.

Would they even need those if the ships weren't so top heavy?

I wouldn't do Carnival for a lot of reasons but especially not for a honeymoon as Carnival seems to attract a lot of families with young kids and no one keeps the kids in line. We gave up on trying to lounge by the pool as the kids were yelling, screaming, doing canon balls, etc. and no one, staff or parents, tried to reign them in.

We haven't experienced this much at all, though I know others have. It also depends on the time of year - obviously, some cruises have many more kids than others (i.e., school vacations). I haven't seen much difference between the mass market lines (Carnival/Royal Caribbean/Norwegian) - other than Royal Caribbean being an older group and it not being as lively as Carnival. We're try a more upscale line at some point.

Yeah, that makes sense. I didn't know how far it was, and I figured the same about lifeboats not being made for long distance travel.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of irritating kids. Normally I wouldn't mind depending on how much of a good deal we can get though - but I would want something else for a honeymoon. This will be my fiance's first cruise (if that's the route we go), and I want to try and plan it as best as we can with the budget we have. From what I can remember, the NCL cruises I've been on were much nicer.

I wish we could afford Royal Caribbean or Princess Cruises though! Sailing Never been on one of those.

Royal Caribbean isn't that much more than Carnival...though I won't pay a premium for RCI after 4 Carnival and 2 RCI cruises. We've had more fun on Carnival. We're not party animals, but it has been too quiet after about 10:00pm on our RCI cruises.

You can sometimes get some reasonable pricing on Celebrity or Princess. We wouldn't mind a more upscale line that caters to younger passengers...most upscale lines tend to attract much older clientele.

Oh, that's a good point. My parents just went on an NCL cruise and she said it seemed pretty dull later in the evening. There's always the show they have every night in the main whatever-it-is room, but she got bored with those. It was also a 16 day cruise though, and I guess things do get dull and repetitive when it is that long.

She also said the food was boring, and didn't change nightly in (what I remember her saying) the main dining room. I thought that was odd - we've been on more Carnival cruises than Norwegian, and I thought the menu changed every night.

I've always wanted to go on an Alaska cruise, but I have heard so many complaints about the cruise ships being full of nothing but old people, and that it was pretty boring on the ship.
