Anyone following the Carnival Triumph cruise ship story?

Carnival Triumph engine fire; lost power; tug boats pulling it to Mobile, AL.

linly [cbslocal.com]

The 500 or so McDonald's franchisees and executives onboard should at least be used to the conditions if they've spent much time in one of their restaurants.

We cruise on Carnival 5 months from today! laugh out loud (different ship though)

I think it is the right time to talk about it, especially when Carnival company was quick to hand out $500 refund to people on the ship to shut them up! Why not talk about their towing bill?

I also get what you are saying about tax payers picking up tabs on people who dont want to work.. So I guess next time my car breaks down Instead of calling AAA and paying them I should just charge the tax payers? After all they would be rescuing me from being stranded on the road?
No, because you have other options. Although we do have free roadside assistance (tire changes mainly, not towing) here, paid by taxes. I'm not saying Carnival shouldn't pay, but they had no other options, and it's really not that much different than any boat/passengers being rescued by the coast guard, or fire/police service. If the coast guard or whoever towed it charges Carnival, they definitely should pay.

Oh please. Spin it anyway you want but it isn't like carnival has a big part in this. My dh is in a similar line of work as zzyzzx. Customers want you to half ass do stuff all the time to save them $$.

True. It does look like Carnival went cheap (with design and back-up systems). Some design flaws that come to light when the engines were damaged by fire.
Good to know we have some ship design engineers on SD.

FYI, the Triumph entered service in 1999, and the cost was $420 million. If you compare to other ships, either Carnival didn't cheap out, or all cruise lines cheaped out.

Triumph cost = $4137.56 per GT (gross ton)
Royal Caribbean Voyager = $4734.99/GT (1999, but this ship has an ice skating rink, etc)
Royal Caribbean Brilliance = $3885.00/GT (launched 2002)
Norwegian Dawn, and Star (2001/2002) = $4360.15/GT (launched 2001)
And ships are just like airplanes in that the later built ships would cost more than the exact same ship built earlier.

I'm no designer but even a layman can see there were problems with the design on the ship when there are limited back-ups. Maybe not cheap but there were issues that showed up after the fire. It appears to be a bad design.

So what about this comment. Can you explain it? Why make a comment if know one knows what you're talking about?

Wait, I have never been on a cruise, but doesnt food change for which suite/living place you pick to stay in as well? So the more you pay/or if you pay for a nice better level, would food and everything be better as well? Or does everyone eat together no matter what you pay to live in?
