Anyone following the Carnival Triumph cruise ship story?

Carnival Triumph engine fire; lost power; tug boats pulling it to Mobile, AL.

linly [cbslocal.com]

The 500 or so McDonald's franchisees and executives onboard should at least be used to the conditions if they've spent much time in one of their restaurants.

We cruise on Carnival 5 months from today! laugh out loud (different ship though)

Wait, I have never been on a cruise, but doesnt food change for which suite/living place you pick to stay in as well? So the more you pay/or if you pay for a nice better level, would food and everything be better as well? Or does everyone eat together no matter what you pay to live in?
I don't really remember. I've only been on one and it was forever ago. I just remember the food wasn't that great. Lobster especially stands out because I'm really picky about my seafood.

We had the same experience, the food was bland and/or overcooked. The only thing everyone liked were the single serving lava cakes, the rest of the desserts were terrible.

On nearly all ships, everyone eats the same food. You have the main dining room, the buffet, then various other eateries...some of the other eateries have better food at an extra charge. For example, Carnival has a steakhouse that serves EXCELLENT food for $35 per person extra.

I put most of our cruise somewhere between Applebee's and Outback...which is fine for us. The service level often far exceeds all but some of the fine dining restaurants we've been to. We rarely eat desserts, though on cruises they make us feel guilty about skipping anything. laugh out loud

I don't like Applebee's or Outback, so I guess my standards are too high for cruise food. laugh out loud

I think applebees and outback are better on a good night Hide. You're right about the service. Their waiters and maids are awesome! I kind of wanted to take the waitress home with us. I don't remember our boat having a steakhouse but it was one of the smaller ships or maybe I just don't remember. I do remember eating on land when we docked. I like the mexican food better at home laugh out loud.

I expected too much. When we're on vacay I'm used to eating awesome food. That's part of it to us.

Yeah, I can see why people would want better quality food, but I'm so picky, I rarely try anything different or unusual. Give me a Caesar salad, a decent steak and potato, and I'm happy. laugh out loud

"Branching out" to me is trying a couple of veggie toppings on my pizza.

Our room stewards on Carnival have been great - on RCI and NCL, they hardly talked with us. The dining room staff has been great on just about all of our cruises. We had an awesome bartender on one cruise - wife discovered martinis on that cruise. laugh out loud

And when does Applebees have a good night?

Rarely, outback is more consistent about being decent imo.

I started drinking martinis in college. Blame sex and the city!

Yeah. Applebee's (up until my last visit) and Outback is fine with me! And I agree - most of the time it's about the service. Great service is one of the most important parts of eating out anywhere - and I've almost always had great service on a cruise.

There was one cruise on Norwegian (I forget which ship or what year) where I had a baked potato at a restaurant. I asked if I could get shredded cheese and bacon, and the waiter said they didn't have any. So instead of letting me go without - even when I told him he didn't have to - he ran down to another restaurant in the ship to get them for me Smilie That's pretty awesome!

And I think they are always refilling your drinks. I take a sip of water, and someone comes by to fill it up laugh out loud

Apparently even on this stranded cruise ship, people said that the staff was still happy to help, and always there with a smile. I don't know how they do it!

What happened at Applebee's? I have not been to one in a good 4-5 yrs. I would say, been to Red Lobster and Outback a couple times here and there, and Olive Garden but not the others.

The last time I ate at Applebee's a few years ago, it tasted like they rolled my entree in salt, added a few more dashes of salt, and then used salt gravy.

Coast Guard: Cause of cruise ship fire was a leak

Sounds to me as if their poor maintenance finally caught up with them.
