My 4yr old was left at his dad's home w/ a 10 and 8 yr old...what do I do?

1,230 2,939 February 18, 2013 at 08:39 PM in Babies & Kids (2)
sorry people. I never venture into the Lounge, but I figured this was worth the question. My son is four and his dad and I have been split up/divorced for 3 yrs+. we have split custody and trade off every other week. we live in TX.

My son told me that he was left at home with the other two boys that live in his home that are 10 and 8 (ex lives with his GF and her 2 kids)

I am thinking of getting a lawyer and taking him to court for child endangerment.

I can understand maybe a 13+ yr old watching some other kid but not 10 and 8. They have no knowledge of CPR, first aid, calling 911 in a panic, fire danger, not answering the front door.

Any thoughts, suggestions? I am kind of scared of turning his dad in, as to what can happen on the weeks I dont have him, but I feel helpless putting my son in that situation.

I called my ex and he admitted they left them but "only for a few mins, and it wasnt my concern on the weeks that arent mine"

(please excuse the typing as my s and w key are busted, so I have to cut and paste. )

Scratchchin Isn't that what they were doing (at least talked about doing) for the Jon & Kate Plus Eight family? I think I remember hearing about how they were going to let the kids live there, and the parents come there depending on their schedule.

I wonder how that turned out... I don't think it worked out for them Annoyed
Sounds like a good idea though!
It worked out well enough to the tune of about a million bucks a year from their TV show.

Thank you to those that actually did help and now I will go back to the threads in sd that are actually practical.
Were those "a few minutes" actually a few minutes or what?

The fact that she evaded answering the question probably means that the answer would only have led to more "not hearing what she wanted to hear" so I guess we can anticipate that it really was just a few minutes. Stick Out Tongue

I think it happens to the Lounge regulars too when they ask something stupid. I feel free to mock people who ask whether or not something on Craigslist / Ebay / Etc is a scam when it's pretty obvious to anyone with 2 brain cells that it is. I don't care if they're regulars or not. The fact that most of the regulars know better than to ask such a stupid question notwithstanding of course...

It doesn't have to be that way. We can start taking money for our services and turn away cases that aren't interesting enough.

It depends on what state you live in. In many states, it's legal to leave the 10 year old in charge, does that mean that I would leave a 10 year old in charge of other children? No, but that doesn't mean that it's illegal. Maryland and South Carolina are age 8 and that is the lowest age requirement of any state. Illinois is age 14, and that is the highest requirement of any state. The laws apply to short outings (less than 4 hours) that do not occur overnight, if they occur overnight, different laws apply. If your ex is actually in the wrong, based on the laws, the first thing you should do is talk to him, explain to him that you don't want your child left with the other children and that he make other accommodations for your child, such as a babysitter if he plans to leave while your child is in his home. If it happens again, you should call the police while the children are home alone.

Wonder how many of you "experts" giving advice actually have kids of your own.
