How hard is it to learn to drive a manual car?

How hard is it to learn to drive a car with a manual transmission? I'm looking to pick up a beater for less than $2,000. I've been looking around lately on the internet and it seems that manuals are always cheaper because most people can't drive them and as a result there's less demand. Also I would assume that manual cars are in better condition than automatics because their owners usually take better care of them. Realistically speaking, how quick would I be able to learn the basics in order to drive it home if I bought one?

Married, but I don't want to lose what I have because I know I'm very lucky. And her car is armored and has a twin turbo engine and a stick.

manual: instant power whenever you need it

auto: delayed power and limited by the ecu

manual > auto
Haven't driven a modern auto have you? They are far more responsive than they used to be. Sorry, but this tired old argument needs to die already. You shifting a manual is not instant, and the time difference between that and my automatic shifting is virtually non-existent. And if it is a CVT, you're totally going to lose in your manual.

well don't get me wrong, i know how things have gotten tons better. Heck my other choice of car was to be a GTI with DSG, which i would of been totally satisfied with. My whole auto vs manual wasn't in terms of racing (btw ugh). Example: If you drive a base and boring corolla or camry, you could get it in auto and fall asleep or get it in manual and feel the car more. You are thinking something totally different.
