Does it now cost $25 for lunch?

937 292 March 17, 2013 at 10:41 AM in Rant (3)
I always wondered when I was a kid about how old people would complain about how expensive stuff had gotten. Yet as a kid it didn't seem that expensive to me.

I think it has to do with our memories of how much stuff used to cost vs how much it costs now.

I went to a mesican resturant with my son after Church today and the bill for both of us was $24. Is that how much it costs for lunch anymore? Maybe. Even a meal at McD seems to be 6-7 dollars.

The interesting thing about this is the meal while OK was not worth $25 to me. I think the problem a restaurant faces is that of perception. My guess is it is really expensive to own a restaurant anymore. Food is higher, energy, taxes, insurance, etc.

Then joe citizen (or Richard) comes along and eats there and says, well that was OK but was it worth $25?

It seems to me the answer for restaurants is the fast casual concept like panera bread or panda express. Have a limited menu of items that can be served fast without a wait staff. At panera or panda my son and I eat for around $17. This seems to be the way to go IMO.

Thank you for reading my rant. wave

Depending on how far you're willing to walk for lunch there're options. I happen to like the food carts around there, but there's also plenty of options between there and 72nd St (<10 min walk). I happen to like Energy Kitchen. If you must have a burger and fries I'd opt for Shake Shack. More expensive than McDs for sure but SOOO much better. I play volleyball relatively often in the area over at John Jay and LaGuardia and it's somewhat true that there aren't a HUGE abundance of GREAT options, but there're better options than McDonalds! A reasonably priced Diner on 63rd(ish) and 10th called Olympic Flame. There's a good Turkish place on 10th and 57th that has sandwiches for like $6-7.50. You're also really close to what I consider the best burger in NYC [parkermeridien.com], but that'd be $15 lunch for sure. You really should use Yelp to find new places. Use the filters to find kinds of cuisine and desireable price range and I'll bet you anything you'll find better options.

I take it the "supermarket" you're talking about is the Whole Foods market? That's better than your generic "supermarket food" at least.

Well that's kind of creepy. I work at John Jay. I been to the Turkish spot and got the
"chicken burger" lunch special. Not a fan. I go to western beef on 11th lol

Nice post, I agree with you. Can't seem to rep you on this board though...

Inflation is the bane of savers. And yes it is nice that the government can exclude food and gas from the price index. But until I can figure out a way to stop eating, or driving (nothing is close to me in the suburbs) they are part of my index.

I don't. All bewbs aren't equal. Even some that are the same size. There are other factors.

Oh... Well I don't have the experience. But how are boobs after pregnancy? Do they get flabby or something? They start hanging?
